Naivete of Parents

Whats going on fellow GC members? I was just wondering. Have any of you ever went back home from college and tried explaining what greek life is all about and the significance, importance and history behind joining them to your parents? And after explaining it have you received blank stares and nonchalant attitudes? I can imagine those who have greeks as parents would probably end up not having to go through all the introduction but me personally i don't have greeks as parents and explaining and expressing your aspirations could be a drag because they never attended a college where greek life remotely even existed so they wouldn't fully understand how important it is. Who here have ever had that kid of experience either before or after you've became greek and what were their reactions?

As for your actual question, I can't relate. My parents pretty much introduced me to the existence of BGLOs.

I don't know what planet you're on but people who tend to speak or in GC case, write well generally proof read etc. before posting whereas those who don't care about their writing tend to post much faster.

The one where people type very quickly, without proofreading, and still think to type "ever gone back home."

But, I wager that it wasn't just a typo on your part. If you actually speak like that, I hope you will think to do better.

Yes, I can relate to how you feel. I was the first in my family to go to college.

I know the feeling. Although I haven't rushed yet, my family is having a hard time understanding why I want to. They think it's just like they see on t.v.

I can totally relate. My dad wants to know why I am working so hard to pay for my friends, but my mom is kind of turning around. She talked to one of her friends whose daughter rushed last year and is now at least a little bit excited about it.

I was raised by my grandmother. No one in my immediate family really knew anything about fraternities or sororities - only negative stuff from news/movies. Honestly, I didn't know too much about it either until I got to college and looked into greek life.

When I decided to pursue my organization, I did it without discussing anything with my family or friends back home. I told my family after all was said and done and I went home the weekend after initiation with my "NEO Glow" on. They had some questions, but in the end they were happy that I was happy.

Years later when I moved away from home, my grandmother donated my old para that I had left home, to some organization. She still didn't really get it. LOL!!

Wow -- a reference to Nazis as fast as post 5. The odds in Godwin's Law have been beaten.

Was this all they saw? If it was, then I can see how the negative stereotypes have perpetuated over time.
