Question At What Age Were ...

Allowed to Date?

Hello Sorors, Frat, fellow Greeks, sisterfriends and folks who happend to drop by...

I had a family experience over the weekend that I'm still chuckling over. during a family dinner one of the younger members of my family posed a question, at what age would she be allowed to date. All of the male members at the table (including her father, and grandfather) responded 50!

I'm just curious at what age were you allowed to go out on a date (chaperoned or not)?

LOL! Now that I think back, I didn't date until I met my husband, I was 21. Yes, I went on Prom at 18. But prior to thatwe just hooked up in groups, everyone meeting at a movie, or something. Personally my daughter or son can't date until 16, but I know they probably sneak off and do so.

I wasn't allowed to date until I was 16, on the single set. I went out in groups starting at about 13.

I don't have any kids, but I think it is ok at 16. As long as you have raised them right and given them a strong background to refer back to...they should be fine. At some point you are going to have let them spread their wings and live their lives...

Question

Do you feel that your parents made the right decision by choosing the age they chose for you to date?

I had my first "real" boyfriend in the 11th grade, so I was essentially able to date at age 16 alone. I was always in some theater rehearsal or another, so I didn't even really consider solo dating prior to that, although I always hung out in groups of friends. I think that by the time a girl is old enough to drive herself home, she's old enough to date solo. For my sons...same rules would apply.

I had my first boyfriend at 12 but it wasn't a "real" relationship. How could it be when I was so young! But back then it was always w/ my older cousin (she's 6 years older than me) and her boyfriend. We did the double date/babysitting thing. My second longest relationship was at 14 (8th grade) I was w/ this guy for almost two years ~ we went places alone (movies, out to eat, etc).

so basically I didn't have a set age at which I could date....

I knew you had to be a Southerner! I have not heard the phrase "taking company" since the '80s!! LOL

To answer the original question I think I was allowed to "take company at 15 and actually date at 16. For some reason, my parents let me sit on the front porch with boys before that, but they couldn't come into the house!

So funny. My boyfriend's mom says that he and I are "courting." I think that's so cute though.
