NPCs at Canadian Schools
As most of us know, Canadian schools aren't all that Greek-friendly, most schools don't have high sorority/fraternity involvement. According to www.canadiangreeks.com, there 12 of the 26 NPC groups and are represented in the following schools:
Alpha Gamma Delta: 7 Schools
Dalhousie University (shares chapter with St. Mary's University and Mount St Vincent (hope I'm not leaving anyone out))
University of Toronto
University of Western Ontario
University of Manitoba/University of Winnipeg
University of Calgary
University of Alberta
University of British Columbia
Alpha Delta Pi: 3 schools
Bishop's University
University of Manitoba
University of British Columbia
Alpha Omicron Pi: 5 schools
McGill University
Carleton University
University of Toronto
University of Western Ontario
University of Calgary
Alpha Phi: 6 schools
Bishop's University
University of Toronto
Wilfred Laurier University
University of Western Ontario
University of Manitoba
University of British Columbia
Gamma Phi Beta: 3 Schools
McGill University
University of Toronto
University of British Columbia
Delta Gamma: 3 Schools
Wilfred Laurier University
University of Alberta
University of British Columbia
Delta Delta Delta: 2 Schools
University of Ottawa
University of Toronto
Delta Zeta: 1 School
University of Windsor
Delta Phi Epsilon: 2 Schools
Concordia University
University of British Columbia
Kappa Alpha Theta: 3 Schools

umm... I don't think Canada is not greek-friendly.. our number of post-secondary institutions are less than those of the US because our population is much smaller. Furthermore Canada has alot of two-year colleges and two-year University Colleges, with students eventually transfering to universities.
For example at the University of British Columbia where i'm from, we have 9 NIC Fraternity Chapters, 1 colony, and 1 soon to be colony. We have 8 NPC Sorority Chapters. We also have 2 Professional Fraternities, and 1 professional sorority. We also have the last international chapter of Phrateres, a girl-only service club affiliated with the Greek System.

Many schools don't recognize the groups individually, nor do many people participate (other than at some schools). On another note, schools with the title "university college" tend to have four year programs as well as two year ones.

Wow, sorry for bumping an old thread (I just realized it was last posted on in 2004. yikes! I haven't been able to find, really, ANY other exclusively canadian sorority-related threads so if I've missed a more recent one ... sorry!) but I just wanted to add quickly ... University of Toronto has 7 sororities and sevenTEEN fraternities? Whaaaat the heck! That just blew me away!
I think the main issue with the lack of interest in Greek life in Canada is just that a lot of people (or at least a lot of people I've encountered whom I've talked about this with) really can't shake off the negative connotations that are often associated with it and with the whole "Americanized" image that it's been branded with. And Canadians really take their pride seriously when it comes to fighting against independence from the States. (I was devastated when I heard HBC was bought out recently. Man. I mean, it was like the FIRST Canadian company ever! To have that taken away ... but I digress.)
I was even kind of iffy about the whole thing (I'm a freshman at U of T) and about recruitment in general ... and I won't lie, the hesitation was because of the aforementioned reasons. But I just went through the first stage of recruitment and I'll be visiting the chosen four houses this weekend and I'm pretty excited about it! It looks like a fabulous way of meeting new people and the girls seemed nice. Some of them a little fake and overdoing it, but I'd assume that's so everywhere and especially because it was only the first day and all that ... I'm sure we were all nervous. But I'm definitely interested in two groups already and hopefully things will work out.
It's really about getting the word out, especially to younger people you know. Before I even got to uni a couple of my friends who were older than I was chose to go with Greek life when they started out and they were really happy with the choices they made and they let me know so .. really, it comes down to spreading the word! So ... yeah! Go Canadian Greeks!

If that's the case, then it's a very recent thing - U of T used to have a much higher Greek (as in fraternities and sororities) membership - something close to 30%. That was back in the 1950s and earlier. Around half the sororities shut down around that time.

Yeah, a significant number of my UBC friends were getting involved with Greek life. They're actually the ones who were talking about it and were encouraging me and others to give it a try.
