Post How can I be a good sister?

I've been reading tons of posts at Greek chat (and I'm probably addicted now!), but I have a question. I joined my house at the very end of last year (my freshman year), and I've never lived in the house. I really want to be a good sister, but I don't exactly know how. My new member period was kind of short, and I love my new sisters, so I really want to make a good "second impression" during recruitment to get the year off to a great start. Any suggestions? Thanks! =)

There is no hard and fast rule to being a 'good sorority sister' I've never lived in the house and will be graduating this coming year. I've been extremely active in the house and most of my friends now are my sisters. I actually live with my Big Sis. Just go to events, volunteer, get to know the girls. You can't force being a good sister. The girls will love you for who you are.

I'm not sure how much help I can be... I'm from a local sorority and we don't have a house (between living and Boston and there being the unspoken brothel law). But what I can tell you is that I (myself) see a good sister as someone who is their for the sorority and all the sisters that are a part of it. Sure, it is important to pay dues and what not, but to be there for events, meetings and just to hang out with each other and form bonds is what I always thought was important.
Also, always love your sisters and show respect for them as they should for you... And respect those sisters that came before you. You may not always agree with them, but the bond of sisterhood should not be broken And always remember to be proud of your sorority and your letters... And of course remember to be yourself, as corney as it sounds.
Thats my advice, I hope this helps.

I understand how you feel. Just remember that your new sisters asked you to pledge their sorority because they saw in you something that told them you would respect, enjoy, and up-hold their organization. So share your creativity and new energy with every event, meeting, and brain-storming-for-fund-raisers-session that your organization has.

Be there for your sisters no matter what. Stand by them as you would want them to stand by you. Make the extra effort to show them that when they graduate you will still be upholding the sorority letters.

As an alumni I am always so happy to see new sisters jumping to run for positions, voluneering for events, coming up with creative ideas to get our sorority name out, etc.

Have a great year! I'm sure you're going to make a wonderful sister!

The advice above is great and I just wanted to add some simple things:

Be Warm, friendly, polite.
Be involved as possible without hurting yourself.
Practice random acts of kindness.
Don't speak badly of others.

Everything else should take care of itself.

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far--this all sounds like great advice (I'm going to print out these responses). I don't want to let any of my new Alpha Xi sisters down!
