Well, I'm not a stalker, but I do cheer for my Pepp Waves from afar in Seattle.

I love baseball, and since my husband went to Rice, this is the time of year that he can finally be excited about his school's athletic teams.

In 2004 the Rice baseball team won the first ever NCAA championship *in any sport* for the school!

At least they have that stellar education to fall back on.

Though Pepp has several NCAA championships, I can empathize. Does Rice at least have a football team?

LOL. That's what I would say about Penn State baseball (at least they got a pretty new stadium last year).

Generally they tend to be in warm environments (the south, Calif., Arizona), because they definitely get the benefit of extra practice and players that grow up practicing year round. Some big schools like FSU, USC, UCLA, Ole Miss, Stanford and ASU are consistently good, but baseball's one of those college sports where smaller schools can shine, too. Rice, Pepperdine, San Diego and Loyola Marymount have consistently good programs. Thanks, Peppy. I checked out rivals.com...does anyone know of a site that lists the top 50-100 schools?

I know it's pretty tough to make the team these days at Long Beach LMU, USD, CSUF and Pepperdine. Where do guys who want to play in college, but maybe aren't top 25 material try to play?

One thing to look at is Div. II or Div. III schools. They have some really consistantly good teams, too, but maybe their players don't get as much attention from some of the big recruiters. My brother wanted to play at Pepperdine soooooo bad, but the competition was stiff and so when he started getting letters from Chapman, he took a closer look and decided to go there instead. He was a pitcher there for his first year of college, before he burned out and transfered to WSU. At the time, Chapman was known as a good baseball program, but I have no idea the status of the program today.

Living in Omaha...you can kind of say that I have a pressing local interest. Surprisingly though, there are a lot of people who are die-hard CWS fans who really don't follow the season at all.

I definitely pay attention to the Big XII and it helps that my Huskers are playing phenomenally right now - makes it easy.

Other good baseball schools include, LSU, Miami (FL), and Texas (all of these are glaring omissions from the previous list). Nebraska used to be a doormat in the old Big 8 days, but since 2000 has been to the CWS three times and a top 8 National seed several times. You can also include Oklahoma State and Arizona as historically good teams.

I would definitely not include UCLA or Ole Miss in the previous list though.

Boyd's World does a pretty good job of predicting RPI's for teams during the season to give you an idea of where teams stack up.

The teams I listed was obviously in no way meant to be comprehensive. I only listed a few examples in a few categories (I do believe I mentioned Arizona, and Ole Miss and UCLA DO have good programs, whether they make it to Omaha or not. A number of teams that have very strong programs that simply don't make it to the CWS very often just because a number of teams are eliminated by that point of the playoffs.

ETA: Hmmm...maybe I was thinking of Mississippi St., not Ole Miss
