Interesting New J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study-Autos

This story just popped up in my mail.
It is kind of interesting to see where Auto companies are listed and in particular US manufacturers.
Ford, Mercury rise in initial quality, Lincoln drops

Porsche is No. 1, Mini second to last in J.D. Power report

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. posted mixed results in the J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study.
The Ford and Mercury brands each jumped two spots and both cracked the top eight, while Lincoln fell from No. 3 to No. 15, the last brand ranked above the industry average.
Quality is a crucial part of Ford Motor's effort to rebuild its auto sales and image. The J.D. Power results -- except for the stumble at Lincoln -- could boost the automaker's promotional efforts.
Small-car specialist Mini ranked next to last, ahead of only Jeep. Mini wasn't included in the study last year because of a small sample size and was well below the industry average in 2006..............

Ford is doing great things these days, GM (minus Cadillac) is terrible.

No they aren't. Ford and Mercury are very similar but Lincoln has a lot of their own powertrains.

Why is this "interesting"? Anyone really surprised by the ratings?

Well from what I have seen and heard, many people seem to think/believe (including for many years Consumer Reports) that Japan was the only one to make "good" cars.
Yes, US manufacturers made more than their share of errors and mistakes in manufacturing, marketing, and product but they have made strong efforts to correct those. In part because they have very little choice but to do so and becasue they are behind the 8 ball.
But IMVHO they have lost at least a generation or two of car buyers because all they know of is Japanese cars.

The last two autos I've had have been Chevys, and they've been great. You want to talk terrible, the two I had before the Chevys were Plymouth/Chrysler and they were ridiculously terrible.
