I need ALOT of help please!! Confused...
Hello, ladies!!
I would like to first and foremost thank all of you who answer my post. You've probably been more of a help then you know and for that you are greatly appreciated!!!!!
So back to my questions!
1) I am a junior transfer from a small CC to VSU where I'm hoping to rush in Fall '08. First of all, I hear that's a strike against me.
I'm very outgoing and have been very involved with my community and educational institute since middle school! I tutor kids of all ages (my last two was a 5th grader and a junior in HS in May '08), help people by translating at doctor's appts., court appearances, apply for government services, etc. In school, I was always an honor student graduation with a 3.4 and being involved in cheerleading, soccer, tennis, FBLA, TASCO (its a student community organization), newspaper staff, dance team, band, Junior Princess for Homecoming, etc. I became very outgoing Junior year but was fatally shy before that. I figured I should go ahead and make friends. In college I became very involved with the International students, helping out and translating, The Ambassadors (good grades and 3 faculty recs are needed, plus its per invitation only. They handle most school and organizational events), and with helping the new Students adjust to camps life. My grades now are 2.7 but hopefully will rise a bit when I graduate with my A.S. this Aug '08. I missed a whole year of school, my family was going through a very rough time and also my health failed very badly (I was diagnosed with a seizure disorder and a heart arrythmia, from when I was rushed to the hospital after I had one while swimming at my school. I dont spaz out, I just "stare" sometimes, or faint. But it's under control for the most part, seizure-free for two months ) and due to this my grades suffered. My recruitment asked me if I had special needs they should be aware of so I told them but that I was on meds for it. Which is true. Was telling them a bad idea?? Will they cut me??
2) I am 20 years old going into this, since I missed a year ( I graduated '05 since I was skipped a year). Am I too old?
3) Where can I find anyone willing to give me some recs???
4) Am I wasting my time rushing????? Please be very honest.
well, once again thank you very much for all of your help!!

read through other threads in this forum. Your situation is not as unique as you think. All of these different factors/"issues" have been talked about in threads on here before.

LOL, you're not too old!
You have a lot of things FOR you in this one (all the work/community service, etc.) and sororities look for involvement since the sororities themselves are at least partially service oriented (however, they are all classified as a "social sororities/fraternities for women"...)
However, if you're graduating this year, you will probably get cut right off because you won't have any time to even be a part of the organization! I would suggest looking into Alumnae Initiation if you want to be a part of an GLO (every group is different about this).
Hope this helps!

PandaPi - she's graduating from CC this year and then going to a 4 year where she will rush as a Junior.
Honeybee: I don't think you'll have any problems. Find out which groups are at Valdosta State and ask around to family friends to find out if they are in any of those groups or know anyone who is. You can also find out if there is an alumnae panhellenic in your town and check with them.

honeybee, contact family members, friends and coworkers of your parents, former teachers(elem., ms ,hs and cc), ladies at your church, neighbors, parents of your friends for recs.
panhellenic wants to know if any pnm has any special needs or is under a doctors care to keep them safe and/or to accomodate any special needs they have(wheelchair, diabetic, epilepsy, etc., or as simple as participating in a sport, cheerleading or band and having a time conflict). i think you did the right thing to let them know.

NO. Please, for the love of everything unholy, go read the Alum Initiation forum before you post this crap.

PandaPi:
Alumna Initiation is an honor for the sororities who have it (it's not allowed in all sororities). It is reserved for certain women who did not have the opportunity to join in college but have shown that they would be a good addition to the sorority and that the exception should be made to allow them to join as alumnae.
Simply put, it is the exception, not the rule. It is also not the solution for girls who didn't get bids in college. It should not be offered or suggested as the alternative to participating in collegiate recruitment.

I don't really feel like this is a "unique" situation.

I would suggest doing your homework on each chapter then possibly considering informal recruitment-- a "hush-hush" recruiting session held after formal fall recruitment and in the spring. You will have less "competition" from the freshmen girls and possibly have more opportunities to share your unique and valuable life experiences. Informal typically attracts fewer girls and you can choose which houses YOU would like to visit. I joined my house through informal recruitment and avoided all of the "formal" stress but missed the excitement. Best of luck!

Hi! :)
Hello, and thanks for posting!
Well please let me rephrase:
1) I have special needs (my epilepsy and heart condition, which just makes me winded a bit). Will the sisters be turned off by them?
2) Being a transfer, and not knowing if I count for free quota or if its stupid to even bother?
3) Can my experience help me overcome my "obvious" faults?
Thanks!

1) Honestly there's people that have medical conditions that join sororities all the time. I have epilepsy and I joined a sorority 11 year ago (jeez I feel old). My sisters never treated me any differently. If they're turned off by something like that, would you really want them as sisters?
2) Why not contact the Greek Life Office to find out if they have free quota? You could also ask them about grade requirements, if they don't have free quota, how likely it is for upper classman to get bids etc. If
And I would agree that while you think this is stuff that's really far out there, most of this is a lot more common than you think.
