Baird's manual help
I just got my hands on a Baird's manual for the first time for a class paper, and somehow I anticipated it being more straightforward than it is. If there is anyone who is familiar with it and could help me out, I'd be super-appreciative.
1) In the college section, are all the chapters it lists under "NIC," "NPHC Men" etc. still open (as of printing), and are all the closed chapters listed under "Inactive"? If so, how is it possible for one group to be listed under Inactive, 1932-1962, but under NPHC Women's as opening in 1961? Does that mean two chapters at once for a very brief period?
2) I notice at one institution the same sorority is listed twice under active chapters, one starting in 1972 and one in 1974 (and it's not Kettering). Both chapters have a "(B)" after them. Alas, Baird's does not seem to have a key. What is the mysterious B?
I'm also surprised to see chapters listed without founding years in the college section ... but if you cross-check in the fraternity section the dates are there.

FuzzieAlum, which edition are you using? The latest edition is (sadly) 1991.

Yup, it's the "latest" 1991 edition. My specific examples are from 1) University of Akron and 2) University of Alabama.

I see what you mean, and I have no idea. Unless someone else with a Baird's has a good answer, then maybe a member of the GLO in question would know?

Yeah. Unfortunately there are a lot of things like this (you can see I started with the As and got frustrated!) and I don't want to have to track them all down. Guess I'll do my paper now best I can and hold my breath for the next edition.

I have three older editions, so depending on the info you are looking for I might be able to help. If you paper is due sometime after the weekend, PM me if you want me to look anything up for you.
I understand that Baird's has always been inaccurate to a point, but that the most recent might be significantly worse than some of the older ones.

What pbear is trying to say nicely is that the latest edition blows.

Many of the Bairds do just that, thicker with less information.
PM me and I will see what I can find as I have 4 with the oldest 1930. 1991 is horrible for information.

Unfortunately, the NIC (which holds the rights to Bairds) is using the poor sales of the most recent edition as an excuse for not publishing a new one, without acknowledging that the lousy quality of it is the very reason the last one sold so poorly. But again, NIC is doing a lousy job of most everything -- witness the defection of several groups within the past few years.

I wonder if NPC would be interested in buying the rights - heck, I know of some NPC women here on GC who could do a GREAT rewrite!

Wouldn't be nice if something was done for an over all betterment for a total Greek basic manual!
oldu, you are correct, and sometimes it seems the NIC is just a shell and trying to over power the same people who provide for them.
