Pledge Pin Requirements

Hello Everyone!

I am curious to see how other Fraternities and Sororities handle pledge pins. For example, does your organization have pledge pins, are your pledges required to wear them at all times, and are there any times when you tell your pledges not to wear them?

I am a member of Omega Phi Alpha and we require our pledges to wear there plege pins at all times, unless they are exercising, at work if their employer won't allow it, or participating in activities that would give the organization a negative reputation. (Like if they were out drinking or something... in occassions like that, we suggest that the pledge wear her pin on the inside of her shirt.)

Any input from other organizations would be helpful.

Thanks!

New Associates/Recruits/Rushees, or what ever you want to call them are required to wear them except under certain circumstances.

If they do not want to wear them then why would they want to be there?

Back when I was a pledge, we wore our pledge pin at all times, except in the conditions you mention, or to bed. Yes, some other sororities required their pledges to wear their pins to bed!

But now we have New Members - Alphas - and they wear their pledge pins only when wearing Pin Attire (what you would wear to a religious service or to a business meeting).

My own opinion is that there should be a happy medium between the two extremes. I wouldn't mind seeing more of the New Member pin rather than less - but I'll "toe the line".

For APO, we used to go by the three Ss:

Sleeping
Sports
Sex

Or in other words, wear it at all times unless doing so would cause physical harm.

I agree. I don't think I wore my pledge pin more than a dozen times during my pledge period, and it was a really pretty pin! Then again, I always liked dressing up for chapter and thought we had too many "informal" chapters where you could wear jeans, etc.

In ZTA, we only wear our pledge pins during events in which "pin attire" is requested - chapter meetings, church, etc. So I didn't wear mine very much - and ours is very unique so I wouldn't have minded wearing it more. Other chapters on my campus required the wearing of their pledge pins or ribbons throughout the pledge period or they would ask the chapter to dress up more often so as to wear their badge/pin (AOPi did this most often) and I believe AXiD had their NMs wear their pledge ribbon, as did GPhiB. Chi-O and A-phi did as we did I believe.

In Phi Mu Alpha, per our General Regulations for Collegiate Chapters, the probationary member pin "shall be worn at all reasonable times (i.e. probationary members shall not be required to wear the pin during sleep, at times when it could cause injury, etc.). It shall be worn on the clothing over the heart and shall be plainly visible. However, the probationary member pin shall not be worn on coat lapels, coats or jackets, collars, or ties."

When I was a new memeber we wore ours all the time, unless sleeping, at practice or drinking (and then we were told to pin it to our bras). I love the ZTA new member pin, it is so different. I was glad though if i did forget to put it on, I wouldn't be yelled at as some of the other sororities did.

Does your chapter still do it this way - just curious. I love not only that our NM pin is so unique, but also what it stands for.

My chapter requires the NMs to wear their NM pins to any event at which active members are required to wear badges. For example, if chapter is badge attire and actives wear badges, the NMs are expected to wear their pins. They are encouraged to wear them when ever they're wearing pin attire around campus, but we would never make it mandatory.

Reason: The NM pin is only to be worn when you're dressed properly. Why would we want them walking around wearing our pin when they (for example) are going to softball practice or going to the gym or lounging wearing sweats? The same rules apply to the badge. Why would we make the NMs wear their pins everywhere, if we wouldn't make actives wear the badge at all times?

Our chapter requires that the new members wear their pin at all times, but we cannot do anything if they don't obviously. If they are out drinking or something else where sisters would not be allowed to wear letters we ask that they pin it to their bra strap.

In SAI, the week before the MiTs are pledged, they wear red and white ribbons at all times (except those stated above). Once they have been formally pinned they are to wear ribbons at all times and their pledge pin when they are dressed up for a performance or attending a business casual meeting.

For Phi Sig, the initiates are required to wear their pledge pin at all time except when they are sleeping, having sex, drinking, showering, etc...

It was made clear that the Pledge Pin (as it was still called then) was only to be worn when wearing chapter attire. Not all pledges wear chapter attire when attending classes, so we wore Pledge Ribbons instead.

As a pledge class we all decided to wear them every day (unless doing something inappropriate), but the only time the chapter required us to wear them was when the sisters were required to wear their Quills (formal meeting, etc.).

Amazing. Being A Member of APO, you worry me.

APO is Not a member of any Social GLO Organizarion but a Service Fraternity.

APO has a Greek Letter designation and only that!

What ever your agenda is, I am not sure? That worries me.

Member of APO, BU chapter and now closed.
