2008 Florida State Rush
Hi everyone! I'm a new transfer student for fall 2008, I'm very interested in rushing as a Junior. Being a part of a Sorority is something I've always to do, but unfortunately the college I've been at has no greek life. I guess what I'm trying to figure out is how competitive it is to rush as a Junior. I'm also having a difficult time figuring out how to get recommendations. The only one I have lined up is from my cousin, an alum of Washington State's Alpha Phi. Florida State doesn't even have an Alpha Phi so I'm not even sure if this will be accepted! lol Any kind help regarding rush at Florida State or just rush in general would be amazing! Thanks for you help!

Ask your cousin if she knows women from other sororities that could write recs for you. Some NPCs allow collegiate and alumnae members to write recs, and others only allow alumnae.

Some info:
The only recs you need are ones for sororities that are AT FSU, so the APhi rec wouldn't help you. However, being from Washington State, maybe she knows some women who can help you get recs for some FSU sororities. Maybe you should ask her.
As far as advice goes, there's some pretty good general advice in this thread: http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...ad.php?t=54403
Try to read as much of it as you can. PenguinTrax & fsuzeta are very familiar with FSU and can probably give some specific advice.

Recruitment at FSU is quite competitive. It is not unheard of for Juniors to be successful, but it is somewhat rare. Letters of introduction will be key, without them, quite honestly, you would probably be passed over in favor of a freshman or sophomore. If you have high grades and a solid leadership track record you can do quite well as long as you don't get your heart set on one or two houses. Expect to be cut heavily due to your class standing.
Start making your contacts now for the 15 groups currently represented at FSU and follow through to ensure their letters of introduction are sent in on time and to the correct personnel. Be sure to contact the Greek Life Office to get information about Formal Recruitment - as an upperclassman you won't immediately be mailed this information.
Good luck!

I'm sure Fratty the PhiGam will give his two cents once he hears you are attending FSU. Don't take him too seriously, though. A lot of what he will tell you is BS.

everyone has given great advice. i would reiterate that you get those recs. to all 15 chapters and that you keep an open mind-give each chapter a chance. juniors can get bids at fsu, but they have to be willing to keep an open mind(and an open heart).
about the recs.-alumnae(and sometimes collegiate members) can only send a rec. to the sorority they are a member of. in other words, your cousin can only write a rec. to another alpha phi chapter. however, if she has friends in other sororities, and those sororities have chapters at fsu, maybe her friends would write a rec. to their sorority based on her recommendation. often if you find one sorority member, chances are she will know women who are members of other sororities. ask your parents friends, your friends parents, former teachers, present instructors, ladies in your church, and your friends-someone should know someone.

IMMEDIATELY find out if there is an Alumnae Panhellenic group in your area, and see if you can register through them. They may well have informational teas or seminars which are very helpful, plus if you register with them they will try and get recommendations for you. However, don't count on them to do it for you. Do your own legwork, too.

From Pensacola? Awesome, I grew up in GB across the bridge & yep, there is a local alumnae Panhellenic association in P'cola. When I was a senior in HS, they had done an informational tea presentation thing for girls interested in Greek Life, at the Gulf Power building on Bayfront, and I believe they have it annually the first week of May or end of April or so now, but it may be at a different location.

Just get as much information as you can and don't be offended if you get cut from a few houses because of your class standing.

Was Jenn Sterger ever in a sorority?
I hope not, but who knows.
