OK...

I fineshed school about a month ago and still don't have a job! Grrr! One of my friends suggested a headhunting service which she used. She said they took a 20K cut, now this chica is SUPER smart and they had her a job in 3 days.

Has anyone else used a headhunter? What was your experience? Were/are you happy with your placement?

I used a headhunter with the job I am currently at. I was pleased with the results.
To use my headhunter it cost me nothing. The company that hired me paid the headhunter-- it amounted to 25% of my base salary.
I was brutally honest with the headhunter--- I described my dream job, the things that were the most important to me, what I would accept and not accept.
I was pleased but be sure to be clear what you want and don't want in a job and an employer.

i will tell you first off that good headhunter companies do not charge you to find you a job. they charge the companies who they find employees for. (aka - old navy pays for the headhunter to find you)
second, yes they are a good idea to use, but they don't usually take new grads. so be careful when using them, but i do suggest it. also, consider temp agencies. they sound cheesy, but honestly they can help you get real office experience that will pay off in the long run.

When I was considering a job that had something to do with my degree, I was told by everyone to look for a headhunter.

I went a different way, but that seemed to be good advice.

I have tried using a headhunter, but it didn't really go anywhere. Maybe it is my degree field (computer jobs seem to be getting harder and harder to find...)

Headhunters do NOT charge. Those that do are thiefs. This is a scam just like those modelling agencies that charge you for everything.

Headhunters call people like me all the time. They make their money from employers. DO NOT PAY THEM!!!!

Personally I find them annoying and useless, but for some it works. Good for people it works for because do what you can to get a job.

My experience with headhunters has not been good. Mainly that's because computer jobs have been hard to come by for the past few years. I actually had a headhunter flat out refuse even to talk to me because of the field I'm in.

It can't hurt to contact a headhunter or two in the course of your job hunt, but don't rely on them as your only exposure to the job market. Use your school's career office, your network, and even newspapers and the internet as well.

As others have said, headhunters charge the company that hires you. If a headhunter tries to charge you, run the other way.

For those of you who used headhunters...how did you find them? If you had a good experience with yours, would you recommend them?

I graduated last May, I'm coming up on my 1 year mark at a job I'm miserable at. I had a job interview last week, that apparently, didnt go as well as I thought, as I got a rejection letter today. I'm going through that post graduation crap....and I figure the next thing I have yet to try is a Headhunter. So I'm wondering where to begin, and how to find a good one.

i use a headhunter... a couple actually. ive had one agency that has been really good in finding me assignments, but FT work is hard to come by. a lot of short term temp positions. of course, all i've been doing is admin work, which is not exciting at all. i'm 2 years out of school and trust me, i know EXACTLY where you are mentally!

Yeah, it's a little heartbreaking. I'm at a point where....I did IT in the military for 4 years. Got out of the military, went to school, got my degree in IT. I've been working at a desktop/network support admin since the monday after graduation for a credit union and quite honestly, I'm bored out of my mind. To put a long story short - I dont want to work in IT anymore. At least not this kind of IT. My desire was information security, or even web development, but unfortunately, I dont have enough experience in either one, to get a job....and there's only so much education I can try to do in my spare time.

As it is, I think I'm trying to go another direction anyway. Accounting - payroll, budgetting, bookkeeping, whatever. I found an online certificate program I'm actually trying to get a grant from AXiD to pay for me, (if they wont, then I'll have to find a way to come up with the money myself). The problem is - my "experience" in this kind of field is strictly the volunteer stuff I've done, as FVP and now Financial Advisor, for AXiD. I updated my resume to include my volunteer experience...but wether or not it's effective, I dont know.

You know - it sucks. Alot of people change their majors 12 times. I didn't. I KNEW I wanted computers. Yeah right. I've realized I like USING computers, not working on them. I made an A with my eyes closed in Accounting my last semester in school....man, if only I had taken it sooner....

I guess I need to find a headhunter, get some advise on my resume, (I think it's pretty good, but I'm really not sure) regoup and go from there.....

On a different note, my friend Cynthia told me that there's a reason i didnt get that job - that there's a better one out there for me, it's just a mnatter of time until i find it. I just wish it would be sooner rather than later. I'm at a point with my current job that i'm dreading my 1 year review, and was hoping to avoid it by being somewhere else before it happened. Not that I think I've done anything wrong...just that, I'm bored out of my mind and i think I have nowhere to go. There's no room for growth here.
