I take it the "several" is a half dozen or more sororities with the same amount of chapters?

I was surprised I don't see Delta Zeta and Chi Omega on the list more often. I guess I asssumed that Chi Omega was just about everywhere!

Well, they are, they're just more spread out. For example - we have a ton of chapters in Missouri, but none in Arizona. Chi O has chapters in both those states. It all evens out.

Isn't there still just one four-year college in Wyoming? That does severely limit the chance for extension!

California definitely has a lot of Alpha Phi presence, there are 22 chapters there I believe!

This just goes to show that not all GLOs are strong in certain areas as compared to others!

I don't have snarky criticism, but rather, statistical criticism for this thread and the other thread about which states each NPC has the most chapters.

Sure, there is some variation, but states like California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, etc. will be the strong points of MANY sororities just because these states have a large number of schools with NPC chapters.

Conversely, when discussing which NPC has the most chapters in a state, the answer will often be the ones with the most chapters nationwide.

My point is that neither of these threads show an NPC's relative strength.

If you were to compare the percentage of chapters in each state for an NPC, that might show more of their relative strength. However, it won't prove much for states with few schools with NPC chapters. For example, Alpha Chi Omega has one chapter in Vermont, and Vermont has one school with NPCs, so Alpha Chi Omega has chapters in 100% of Vermont schools. Alpha Chi Omega has 13 chapters in California, out of 40 schools with NPCs, meaning that they have chapters in 32.5% of California schools. However, it wouldn't make sense to say that Alpha Chi Omega is stronger in Vermont than they are in California.

I think the only way to really determine the "best" NPC would be to look at what percentage of chapters of each NPC that are achieving a certain set of things standardized by all groups. But since each I/N HQ determines award winners in individual categories different, has different minimum standards, different levels of achievement, and emphasize different qualities, it would be difficult to do this.

I'm not criticizing you, oldu, just pointing out factors to show the limitations of the data you've compiled.

I agree with this 100%.

Perhaps this is my simply interpretation of the original post, but I never got that this thread was about who was "best". Simply which NPC has the most chapters in a particular state. For example, there are 14 colleges in Kentucky and 13 have NPCs. Kappa Delta happens to have an active chapter at eight of the schools. 61.54% Which is more than any other NPC in Kentucky.

Revised: There are 13 Kentucky campuses with NPCs. One campus has Greek Life, but no NPCs.

I was just making a general statement, not about this thread alone, but oldu's threads collectively, because a lot of GCers think that oldu is just trying to find different ways to find the "best" sorority.

Got it.

I guess my statement might apply to most of those threads as well. It just does not seem to *me* that there is much of a "who is the best" tone to his posts. If anything he leaves that up to everyone else to dissect and discuss.

Just take it at face value. It's interesting to me (and many others).

Oh I do just take it at face value. I enjoy most of oldu's threads. The "Who's the Best" viewpoint was brought up in the Phi Beta Kappa thread.
