Does the Man Get a Watch (or Other Gift)?

Ok Ladies and Gents,

There is a thread titled "It's all about the ring." Now, ladies, what do you think that you should get your fiance, if anything, as an engagement gift?

Did you know that it is tradition to buy the man a nice watch? A nice watch could run you....

Did any women get their fiance a gift? Would you?
Men, would you want/accept a gift or is this time all about the woman in your eyes?

I would DEFINATELY get the person an engagement gift. I would go farther than a watch, especially if he isn't into that. Something that he's really, really into...no doubt, I would buy it!

I had not thought about it before, but I would certainly get a gift for my then fiance.
I think most men would appreciate a nice watch, but like AKA2D, I would get him something that reflected his tastes. I don't, however, think that I would spend what he spent on my ring (probably half); something about that doesn't seem quite appropriate, like it might not sit well with his male pride.

What do you think? Do you think if you bought him a gift comparable in price to the engagment ring, he would feel weird about it?

Hey Soror, are you back in town?

One question: how would you *know* how much he paid for your engagement ring?

I suspect that you wouldn't know. None of my friends told their significant others how much they forked over.

I wouldn't make the SO tell me, but I would probably do some investigating on my own. But if I didn't know, then I suppose the other problem would be moot.

It depends on the guy. Hopefully, if the female is marrying the dude, she knows him and how he'd possibly react.

For instance, If I became engaged... The dude is a musician (on the side in his spare time). Let's say he plays BASS. I might venture out to a store and pick up something, maybe another BASS, maybe something that goes with it. *shrugging shoulders* But, whatever I would purchase, it would definately knock his socks off as as he would have knocked mine off by proposing.

Take it to a jeweler and have it appraised (like I have any gift I've ever been given) lol.

It's not so hard to figure out the cost of a ring if you've done even the slightest bit of research. I mean, I worked at a jewelry store 10 years ago, and I've kind of followed the trends, so I can probably tell you within a 1-2K range what a ring cost, what the carat weight and clarity are.

YES I will buy the dude something cool. Of course, since I'm happily single, it's a moo point now...

Munchkin, you've got me. I have this disease where I never know the price of stuff that I'm buying - sometimes even after I've paid for it. Thus, while I could probably tell you the carat weight of a ring, I have no idea when it comes to prices. It never dawned on me to think of that...seriously. But now, if someone has not worked in a jewelry store, how would that person have an idea of how much the ring cost.

You would buy him "something cool." Would that be on par with what he spent on your ring - since you will know what that amount is?

i had heard of a superstition where you never buy a man a watch or shoes unless you are married. reason being:

1. if a man has that watch, he may check to find out when it's time for him to leave you.

2. if a man has that pair of shoes, he may wear them as he walks out of your life.

i'm not the most superstitious person but i did keep those in mind when looking for his gifts. also, i never checked the price of my engagement ring/wedding set. he got me what i really wanted and that was good enough for me

Never let a man buy your clothes that you are not married to... He buys you a dress and says, "let me see you in it" and you show him... He buys you a blouse and says, "let me see you in it" and you show him... Then he buys you a string and says, "let me see you in it"... What are you going to do?

Since my husband and I got married all kattywomped, I did buy him a BEAUTIFUL MOVADO watch with rose gold. He saw it, and said, "It's PAINK!!!"

Rarely does he wear it. Kinna pissed me off, actually.

If I were to buy him a gift, it has to be to do an activity or a toy. Men don't admit it, but they still like getting the toys for the boys or the difference between a man and a boy is the price of his toys. So, if I had the money, I pay for him and little buddies to go to the nearest Mercedes AMG Challenge. BMW has one, too.

I would also hook up with the Tiger Woods Invitational at the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas. Get him 50 yard line in the press box seat tixs. Back stage passes to the latest. If he hobnobs, have him shake hands with who's who...

With my husband, I get to walk him through animal sanctuaries and see the zoo's get a deal with him because he's an expert in aquatic habitats.

It is ALL about ego and how you can boost it...

Hayle, maybe all you have to do is wear that string, with a nice side of T-bone steak...

That is what being creative is all about.

I don't understand your question. Dude proposes (usually it is a surprise). The next day you take the ring and have it appraised, find out how much he spent. Then buy him something comparable.
