hi! it's so random that we'd meet online first. I'd love to answer anyquestions you have, you can post them here or feel free to email me at o-chan2@northwestern.edu
nu greek life is quite low key, since we have such a large presence at the school (something like 40% is greek). There's not a lot of pressure to join, and a lot of people go into rush pretty unsure if they're going to go greek.
as regards to rush, it's pretty low-key here if you compare it to southern rush, as it doesn't happend til the beginning of winter quarter, so you have a quarter to really make friends with everyone. Dont' feel weird if some upperclass girls don't really talk to you, there's all sorts of panhel rules that forbid showing preference to potenitial rushees so they don't become biased or get their hopes up. The most important thing you can do to be prepared for rush is to get involved first quarter, as that makes you look more interesting and gives you lots to talk about during parties. And get to know a lot of people. Campus is small, and chances are, a few of the girls you meet will know someone living in your dorm/ member of your committee/ from your hometown etc. Getting involved also gives you some idea of the greeks on campus. Since we all participate in stuff, more than likely you'll meet some sorority girls there. Participate in soror philanthropies. Chi o 5k, DG anchor splash, and tri delt triathlon, and earthball are all in fall. This gives you a chance to see them interact with each other, without the "image conciousness" of rush
Have appropriate clothing. two or three years ago, there was a blizzard during rush. Last year, it was freezing cold. You'll be standing outside for up to 10 minutes between parties so you'll really need it!
If you're really not into formal rush, a few houses do spring rush. Alpha Delta Pi was just colonized last year, so they COB all year. Delta Zeta and Chi Omega usually do spring as well, and that's very informal.
let me know if you have any questions about rush or nu life in general!

to Liv4ChiO:
I was just wondering if we need recs/ resumes or if high school GPA counts. I have of course been hearing all about this stuff on the rush board - I graduated HS with a 3.5 but i have NO ONE to give me recs, other than maybe one active. Also, how much do legacies count? I am a legacy but unfortunately we do not have a chapter of that sorority on campus...
Thanks!!!

NUcutiepie
A high gpa is important for rush, more so for some houses than others. Each house has a minimum GPA for pledging, usually in the range of 2.0-2.5 but don't take this as an indication of the houses academic standard. These numbers are basically in line with the uni's academic probation policies, and it's more for the house to keep clear of social probation. HS scores aren't considered, as it's assumed you are of a certain academic standard to be at NU anyways. However, houses do see your fall quarter grades, so keep that in mind.
In terms of recommendations, they're not allowed here. Panhel has a bunch of rules regarding showing preference to freshmen, so don't expect to be invited to houses etc, unless it's a specific pre-rush event. like hootie said, your best chance is to get to know some actives and cross your fingers they mention your name.
Legacies are only important for that particular house. BTW, which are you a legacy at?
the most important thing, more than knowing actives and and exceptional gpa, is to get involved. It makes you look more interesting, gives you a lot to talk about, and a perspective on what NU life is all about.
