Curly Hair
okay well i love posting new topics and i love it even more when it gets a lot of responses. Hopefully this one will, well atleast from everyone with curly hair. Like i think i have said before, i have curly hair but its not really really curly like some people, Allie- you have the REALLY curly hair right? Anyway, it is so hard to manage on foggy/rainy days!! Does anyone have any suggestions or products they have used that seem to work? I have tried a ton of products. There is this one by Frizz-Ease called secret weapon and it works alright. In a couple of hours my little baby hair frizzies are back up! Also, what types of things do ya'll put in your hair. I have to put mousse on, and then let it air dry. Thats why i wash my hair at night, so the next day its not dripping wet. Therefore, i take two showers a day. One in the morning to "wake" me up and then one at night to wash my hair.
About two summers ago i went to the salon to get it professionally straighten and it actually worked out great. I loved it, but i havent done it again. After my hair grew out i would blow dry it straight but then it wouldnt be as straight and it also got really dry. Now i have learned to accept my hair the way it is! Okay so come on- lets hear from you curly haired gals and guys!!
Well since i am unfortunately addicted to Temptation Island, i need to go and watch the season finale.

Ok. I too don't have super curly hair, but its curly enough. And on top of it, its long and ridiculously thick, so..lots to deal with.
For Curly days I use:
KMS or Rusk Mousse. (I prefer KMS tho both good)
Sorbie Curl Form
For lots of curls I blow dry with a diffuser--makes the curls smaller, curlier, more defined.
For looser curls, I leave in a towel for 20 minutes and then mousse and sorbie it, blow it dry for like 3 minutes and let it air dry the rest of the way.
For Straight Days:
Redken Glass and a COnair straigtener/steamer with comb attachment that you can get at target/walmart for $20.
When I am done my hair is as straight as Lucy Liu's. -- I've tried every combination of product to get it straight and frizz free and its this $10 bottle of Redken Glass that works like a wonder drug.
But by far the best thing I've done for my hair and the way it looks is to STOP washing it everyday. It goes under the water for a rinse and condition everyday, but I only shampoo it every other day. This has made the texture and hold of it, whether curly or straight 1000% better. I used to think I could never do this, that I HAD to shampoo everyday, but its just so much better since I stopped!!!
whew. Ok that's Amy's Hair Care Regimen. ha ha LOL.

Oh my gosh - I could teach a class on the woes of curly hair. Yes, I have the dread-lock curly hair. This is what I do to it in the morning. After I wash it I brush it and then shake my head really hard to let it fall naturally. Then I put Friz Ease, then Mousse (alcohol free) on and hang my head upside down to blowdry. Never let it blowdry all the way. Then I go put on my makeup and stuff. Then right as I am heading out the door, I put on a gel - Tigi Bed Head Friz Control (I think - it is green and smells like apples) - lightly over the top layer to smooth down all the flyaways.
To give you an idea at to the curlyness of my hair - when it is curly it is at my shoulders. When it is straight, it comes to the middle/bottom of my shoulder blades.
People with curly hair usually have very very very dry hair, so it is best to wash every other day. I can't do that though, so to make up for it I get a really deep deep, super deep conditioner and one of those clear plastic hair cover things. I put a ton of the conditioner on my head then the cover thingie and then heat it with a blow dryer for like 20 minutes. It is the same thing as a deep conditioning treatment at a salon. I do that about every 1 1/2 to 2 weeks, and that helps a lot. I usually give myself a pamper day - I do all the little beauty maintainance things that we ladies do - you know what I mean, we don't have to share all our female secrets.
One more suggestion - avoid dying curly hair. Yep, I made that mistake. It dries hair out even more!
On top of everything else, my hair is really thing - and dark red! So, with the thickness, you can imagine the bushiness. And red hair eliminated so many colors from my wardrobe.
Anyway, hope y'all can use some of what I said!
And by the way, Lucy Lui is a Chi O!

I do dye my hair and if its done right with the right products (the goddess who does my hair uses redken--rocket red, Allie. ) it can actually be not bad for the hair. But its all in the product and the way its done.
My hairdresser has curly hair--to me that was the key, she knows how to handle curly hair.

a couple of years ago i thought i had dandruff, but then when i went to the dermatologist he said i have dry scalp and it is really bad to wash my hair everyday. so now i wash it every other day.
last summer i got highlights and they were sooo great, but that was when i wore my hair straight. i want to go back and get them this year but i dont want her to brush my hair out when she puts my hair in foils since that will cause major POOF!! anyway- i guess she'll know what to do!
its so great to hear all these tips for curly hair!!

Ahhhh. I have wavy hair that just frizzes, and it sucks cause I live in one of the rainiest areas. However I have found something to tame my hair - the TIGI Bed Head Control Freak Line: I use their shampoo, conditioner, straightner - it works sooo well.

Since no other guys are going to post, I thought that I would...
I have thick curly and wavy hair... but I generally keep it short short short so that I don't have to worry about it
BUT, I have to get it cut every week 'cause when it starts to grow out, I get the "BRADY BUNCH" poofy hair... you know, the BIG guy hair thing that was "in" back in the day.
Recently I started going to this all guys salon... not a barber, but a salon. Well this guy who is cutting my hair now is having me grow it out a little bit (I guess the military cut isn't in anymore or something) so I have to use Bed Head super goo (I forgot the actual name) to control it... and now I have all this crazy hair sticking up all over my head... I don't know if it looks good or not, I'm just trusting the hair guy...

It's soooo nice to be able to commiserate with fellow curly hair people. I was a frizz ball in high school until someone introduced me to mousse. I too have very curly hair. And I'm not here to offer assistance in how to handle it.
But I do have a question to my fellow curly posters. Do you guys wanna hurt people who have straight hair to complain they want curly hair? I have to explain over and over that curly makes me crazy and that they don't realize how easy they have it with their low mainenance hair. Got straight hair? Is it messy? Brush it. Cause you can. Got curly hair? Is it messy? Did you make the mistake of going to sleep on your hair? You have one of two choices, shower or pony tail. That's it. You brush out your hair if it's curly and side ways through doorways must you go. So take it from me and anyone else with curly hair, it's cute, and yes, it can be fun. But the high maintenance style of the curls can get pretty gosh darned annoying!

Billy - Thanks!!
I will never understand people who dye their hair red, but I know guys who love it! As for dying in general, my hair breaks easily - very easily - so that may be most of the problem.
What I hate is when people ask me, "Did you perm your hair?" Right - I would pay someone to make my hair look like this?!?!?! Hi, Ms./Mr. Hairdress I want to look like Carrot Top. Yea - OK.
My darling brother has curly hair. My parents didn't cut his hair until he was three years old (I was only seven but already complaining about his future psychological trauma by the time they cut it) and it make me so mad. It dried naturally into perfect Shirly Temple ringlets!!! And he's blond. It would suck when strangers would come up and say "oh, what a pretty little girl" to Matthew and my parents would say - "he's a boy, we just haven't gotten around to cutting his hair."
I guess the grass is greener on the other side, so to speak. I want straight hair, and other people want curly hair. I think if they knew what a pain curly hair was they wouldn't be so happy with it.
Oh, I meant to say this earlier - I did the whole permanent straightener thing too. It lastes three days! And the everything was all back. So that was $$$ down the drain.
OK, I'm having issues with my hair. There must be some reason for this mess. I just am not quite sure yet.

hey Allie--
I dye my hair red... It was red when I was little --gold red and got black as I got older--very odd on someone with the coloring for red/gold hair. So now its red, but a dark auburn red and I love it.
Also can't beat the 2-3 days of relaxed curls after its dyed. LOL.

I agree Leslie! I wake up after sleeping on my curls and its like insta-dreadlocks...which explains the ponytail I'm sporting today!
Don't you love it when straight haired people look at your messy mop of curls and quite seriously say 'why don't you try brushing it sometime?' aaaarrrgghhh my aunt does this all the time, drives me freaking nuts!
