BGLO Unity? I know we've heard this before, but...

Yesterday I was out with a friend, who is intersted in becoming a part of the BGLO family. I myself am not Greek. Anyway, we ran into an AKA friend of mine (my mom's really), and my friend began talking to her about how she had been researching orgs, and how she was very interested in SGR. I've never seen my AKA friend turn so nasty! It was a total shock. She looked at my friend square in the face and asked "Why would you even CONSIDER doing that?! No one cares about them! No one even knows who they are! Those chicks (yes, she said chicks), are a total waste of space in the NPHC. UGH!"

Pause here to understand my level of shock....

Moving on. After my AKA friend walked away, my hopeful Greek turned to me and said "Well gee...now I don't want any parts of that nonsense". It saddened me, because although I am not Greek, this young woman would be an asset to ANY org.

Because many in my family are Greek, I do know SEVERAL accomplished women and men in ALL the orgs. I also know many who simply are not very active, or even financial, but love proclaiming their org...again, in ALL orgs...that AKA being one of them. I am not here to be bashing AKAs, SGRHos, or any other org, as I hold all of them in high esteem. In fact, my sister, an accomplished, popular, powerful public political figure is an SGRho, and my cousin, a teacher, is an AKA. I also have an Aunt who is a Delta, and another cousin who is a proud Zeta. I'm not in any of those orgs because I'm doing my best at the time to focus on why I came to college, and that's to get educated. The two women involved in this incident are both grown and out of school.

As I look to the future for my own personal decisions, I would appreciate some BGLO members reaching out and back to the younger generation to help us better understand these strains and this seemingly unsisterly/unbrotherly division. I know all the stereotypes...and I know a few BANGIN' SGRhos...2 who are even pageant queens! I also know some VERY pretty and not so pretty AKAs...so I know stereotypes can't possibly ring THAT true amongst a group of grown, accomplished, well educated women.

Could someone simply help to educate me on this kind of thing? I feel that just as I should educate myself thoroughly on any org that I find of interest, I should be educating myself on the history of things, the good, and the bad, and everything in between.

Thanks

WOW...first off, let me say this: My mother and her sister (My auntie) are an AKA and an SGRho, and my Mother (the AKA) would never tolerate such ridiculous behavior from her fellow Sorority Sister. My Mama is the type that wouldve pulled that young woman aside and educated her about the true meaning of Greek Unity. I am so sorry to hear that you two experienced that. These kinds of instances make it much harder for the BGLO orgs to remain relevant, and continue legacies. As far as history goes, I did a bit of research on SGRho, and AKA (although I know a lot from my Mom), just for the purposes of answering your question. I found a RICH history between them both! And My mother always goes out to SGRho events, supports their programs, and does a lot to support my Aunts chapter. Believe it or not, she's slightly more active with the SGRhos then she is with her local AKA chapter (she'd kill me if she knew I said that, lol!). SGRho was the ONLY black sorority not founded on a black campus! That's simply amazing! They were founded in the midst of the Klu Klux Klan no less! And AKA was the first sorority to make a name for themselves when black people were not allowed into white orgs. These two sisterhoods both have a rich and strong history, and all of their members should be, and are proud! I always hear my Aunt say that she sprinkles disrespectful people with "Royal Blue and Gold Poodle dust", and keeps it moving. She's really a great woman, and so is my Mommie! So the point of all this is that stereotypes abound, and it is sad. Just the way we as black people have been stereotyped for years. That AKA who says SGRho means nothing to the NPHC needs a serious history lesson. SGrho, AKA, ZPhiB, and DST are where it's at. The upper crust of black society, the top black professionals, make up those groups! No disrespect to anyone, but tell your AKA friend to spend some time researching and respecting other orgs. period. But part of me wonders if she was so bold to speak that way in public, to someone she did not know, where is she getting that mentality. Is it prevelant in her chapter? My Auntie always says it takes a strong woman to plan and go the hardest route, or the road considered "less followed", although I don't think SGrho is less followed, I understand what she means.
What you experienced is sad and wrong. That's the point of the message.

Life Lover is a liar. All BGLOs do is create strife within the black community and not one single member of these orgs want to admit it. Black people are the only race of people on the planet who discriminate against their own kind based on skin color. THAT's probably why your AKA friend talked smack on SGRho. Those girls are robots. Trained to believe that having fairer skin, or being associated with a group of women know for being mostly fair skinned, makes them better than those who are not. To think , the only thing any of them ever did was to be born fairskinned purely by chance. The true division between these orgs lies in skin color. Deltas, SGRhos and Zetas are known for being comprised mostly of gorgeous darkskinned women. AKA is know for being "prissy", but many of all of these women in all of these groups have serious self esteem issues. They feel that belonging to something makes them worthy. Never even realizing that to the rest of the world, you're nothing more than a "n-word", no matter what you pledge. I'm glad I got away from that frame of mind and robotic way of thinking.

For the record, I'm a former. So I KNOW what's ingrained in these women. Don't get me to testifying on this post. I will let the dogs out for real! I know the kinds of things ingrained in their minds, and why they treat other orgs the way they do. This group does not believe in Greek unity, only amongst themselves, and a select other few. It's down right dispicable. But if they're on their deathbeds and the only doctor that could save them was a member of another org, it'd be "oh sistergreek" this and "oh sistergreek" that. Hogwash.
And I know some scary azz modertor will kill this thread. Lest the funk REALLY hit the fan up in here, and these groups be revealed for what they truly are. ALL these orgs are a joke. Be thankful you havent pledged yet, and run for the hills!

Let me get this straight. Three newbies post on this topic in less than an hour?

Please stop with the fictional characters and stories. We're not stupid on gc. It sounds like you (the one person creating threads like this lately) have some issues and opinions regarding NPHC orgs but this is not the place. Members of various GLO's come here to chat and exchange ideas with one another.

I think your questions/opinions would be better served over at www.pledgepark.com. Yes, that's it! The NPHC community over there is much more active. They will be more than happy to entertain you.

It was kind of frightening.

Stop spreading this untruth. Intra-group prejudice and discrimination occur in EVERY racial and ethnic grouping.
