Thumbs up Rad Events in Your City

Ok, I have lived in Columbus, Ohio since I came to school here a few years ago. For the most part, I'm not very impressed with it. (And I'm saving some cash to move in a year or two). But it does have a few things I really enjoy. I thought it would be cool to have a topic where you can show off your city. Because some of us may want to move there someday or maybe we might just be visiting, but it always helps to know what's going on. So here are some things to catch if you're visiting Columbus:
  • Comfest (the Community Festival). A free festival that has live bands on four stages, performing arts and vendors. It's held during the last weekend of June (Fri-Sun). Totally a grass roots effort with no corporate sponsorship.
  • Gallery Hops. These are the first Saturday of every month year-round. There is an area called the Short North that houses several art galleries as well as some interesting shops. They stay open until about midnight and you can go buy art and random fun things. Also great to people watch
  • The Columbus Blue Jackets. If you like hockey, this is our brand new NHL team with a beautiful new arena that also hosts a lot of concerts and other events.
  • COSI: Mainly for kids, but adults have fun, too. Science & Industry hands-on type of museum. A little on the pricey side, though.
  • Columbus Zoo. I don't know how it compares with nationally known zoos, but has a great layout (based on the continents) & I was pretty impressed
  • German Village: Just like it says... an area just south of downtown that was established by German immigrants. Some great restaurants and a few interesting shops.
  • The Brewery District: practically an extension of German Village. Although the Columbus Brewery Company (a local micro-brewer) also has Miller on tap, to the disappointment of some of my friends.

The citysearches are great for this topic . Check out http://bayarea.citysearch.com/ for info on the Bay Area, CA.

If anyone's ever gonna go visit San Francisco/the Bay Area, feel free to e-mail me or start a new topic...I'll gladly give you tips on what to do, where to go, etc.!

But anyway, you can do almost everything in SF.

If sports are your thing, there are tons of great pathways for hiking, nice surfing conditions (most of the time haha), nice golf courses, great lakes, and the greatest ballpark of all (Pac Bell Park - yeah, I'm biased ).

There are tons of ritzy, different, or just plain interesting shops and malls here. There's also Chinatown and Japantown...plus it's amazing to go to Haight-Ashbury and still feel like you're in the the Era of the Hippies or something.

Great restaurants, nightlife, here, too.

And of course you can't miss Bay-To-Breakers, a 10-mile race where many of the participants go decked out in zany costumes. Nor can you miss all the Gay Pride parades here. Or the beautiful fireworks that go off each New Year's or Fourth of July in Chrissy Fields. Plus of course the gorgeous views from Pier 39 (Fisherman's Wharf).

Don't forget to check out the cable cars, Lombard Street (supposedly the windiest, curviest street in the world), and the Victorian houses (you know, the houses always featured in the postcards)!

And yes, it's San Francisco - so things here are sometimes very eccentric or wacky...but I love living here!!!! Beautiful town with sooo much to do...plus it's interesting to have neighbors from all walks of life, with all different religions, ethnicities, and sexual orientations.

Newbie, SF is probably one of my favorite cities in the world. With any luck, I'll be in the Bay Area after graduation (May 2003).

I live in North Florida (aka, NoFlo). It's a great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live here! (Wait, I already do live here). Regardless, here are some places:

1). THE BEACH. We have white sand. Seriously. The beaches are among the prettiest and cleanest in the nation.

2). SEASIDE. This is where they filmed "The Truman Show".

3). SILVER SANDS OUTLET CENTER. Supposedly, the largest designer outlet store in the nation. (Yes, larger than Foley, Potomac Mills, and Wrentham Premium).

Besides the Arch and Budweiser Beer, St. Louis is a great town! Some rad events include: any St. L Cardinals, Blues or Rams game, a night out on Lacledes Landing and a trip to the Old Spaghetti Factory, shopping in the little shops along the University City Loop (home of Nelly) and going out to eat or listen to music there.

Check out www.stltoday.com for more on St.L!

Sorry, I dont. But you may be able to find out on The Sporting News' website. I would just try a general internet search. The giants usually have a good following to when they play at Busch - I am sure people are following Bonds fairly well. Big Mac for us seems to be in a slump, but you wouldn't know it by fan reaction here. The Cards have taken a few hits lately - i.e. last series with the Giants. I have awesome tix to a July 31 game vs the Braves, am excited!

Thanks for the tip! I was so sad when lately, Bonds has been in a homerless stretch - like 10 or 11 games, but the past 2 games, he hit balls that were like inches shy of being a HR!!!! . I really hope he chases or breaks Big Mac's record!! I really like Big Mac - I think he was soo great/and is still great for teh game of basball, but i'm also a die-hard Bonds fan and Giants fan . Can I ask, what is the general feeling in STL about Barry Bonds chasing Big Mac's record??

Yes, it seems that in each NL city, there are a few Giants fans sitting in the stands!! Where are you sitting for the game against the Braves?? That should be a very exciting game !

Well, when Bonds was last at Busch, fans weren't to kind - generally you hear resounding boos. But outside of when the Giants are in town, noone really mentions anything negative.

My tickets are along 3rd Baseline, Field Box. So while I am a diehard Cards fan, I will get a close up of some Brave hotties - i.e. Chipper.

We in San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose are number 10!!!! But I can't believe that Phoenix and D.C. are higher than us (never knew that sports are bigger there than here) .

Thanks for the info . Yeah Bonds is both booed and cheered for in most cities it seems! It seems like the boos are getting softer though. Wow, field box!!! Thos are AWESOME seats . Once I sat a row behind the dugout - what a great day that was!!!!! It was wonderful to get autographs . Have fun, ok?!!
