Tough to pick a side on this one. I don't know if I should be mad at the studio for watering down the story or maybe buy into this conspiracy theory and be mad at the author for trying to alter peoples' religious views.

I don't think it matters.
The movie isn't doing as well as expected in the box office and it's not because of a boycott. It is probably because of the "watering down the story" and Nicole Kidman's lack of acting prowess.
Boycotts are usually only free advertising, anyway.

I think I'd be more afraid of people that miss the message of the film - a message seriously dumbed down from the books - that blind adherance to dogma is wrong, in this case presented as blind adherence to a "Church".
Ironically I thought many of the frothing at the fundies (including ironically that ignorant ass William Donahue) would like a film that attacks the Catholic Church and a blind uncompromising adherence to dogma...

To condense any novel into a two hour movie is going to require some things are left by the wayside. That's just a fact - look at the Harry Potter films. Don't even get me started on what happens to my beloved Victorian novels unless they become a mini-series . . . .
As far as the atheist/religious aspect - I think the previous posters have fairly presented my viewpoint. I'm secure enough in my faith to risk seeing a movie without feeling threatened.

I'm probably behind the times, but I wasn't aware of the author or the books until the controversy over the movie. As a conservative-seminary trained Christian, I have to say that it's refreshing to see attention to the questioning and complaints of an atheist. If I had children, I would want them to read the books.

About killing god... sounds a little traumatic to me.
I definitely understand the uproar but at the same time, its not that big of a deal.

It's not for a 6 year old, but the target age group won't freak out over it. Children that is, some adults will freak out over everything.

Absolutely it was, I would never take a kid to that movie. The torture scenes were some of the most brutal that I've ever seen.

And this is different somehow from promoting Christianity to kids? Or Islam? Or Judaism? Or Wicca? Or Druidism? Or Buddhism? etc. etc.
If parents can't have an open conversation about these themes with their children, I have to wonder about what else they won't discuss.
