Letter wearing....right or wrong?

Hey y'all,
I'm putting this out to the brotherhood, hoping to quell the internal struggle I'm having.

See, my DH (dear hubby) got me a new set of letters for Channukah and they're made of fabric depicting the NE Patriots (our fave team...14-0, baby!!). I'd like to wear them to the sports bar/restaurant where we always go to watch the games. Personally, I don't drink because our 18 mo old is with us and I drive, but there will be drinking at the table and in the bar, obviously.

Now, in my social GLO, this would be a huge no-no. We're not allowed to wear letters anywhere alcohol is served. I'm not sure how A Phi O feels about this, so I'm asking for the advice of the collective.

Thanks in advance!

Well, as far as "wrong" that's the rooting for the Pats in itself, LOL.

But as long as you're not going to get falling down drunk or cuss a blue streak or throw things at the screen, I don't see a thing wrong with it.

I personally don't find anything wrong with it. The letters sound cute (and thoughtful as a gift!)....I'd love to see a picture.

Now if you were wearing them to an opium den....

Dude, I just had a vision of many GCers laying around the opium den in lettered sweatshirts, smoking up. BEST.

Sure.

I wouldn't do it if there were large number of APO undergrads or in a town where the University is the main business in town (like Slippery Rock, PA), but given then situation, I have more problem with your rooting for the Pats.

OTOH, if the Pats end up playing the Cowboys in the Super Bowl, let us know where in the DC area you will be watching, so we can both root against the Cowboys. (My wife and I live in Montgomery County, MD) (just north of DC for those of you not in DC metro)

Randy

I know in my chapter, we weren't supposed to drink in our letters, but if there was a rule about wearing letters somewhere alcohol is served but we aren't drinking, I never knew it.

There is nothing in any fraternity document (i.e., published by the National Office) that restricts the wearing of letters. Many chapters have made rules or policies restricting the wearing of letters/pins while drinking, but even in the most 'strict' chapters regarding the non-wearing of letters while drinking, never have I heard that letters can't even be worn in a place that serves alcohol. As a matter of fact, there is nothing that says we are a 'dry' organization - the only restriction on alcohol and APO is that alcohol can't be a part of any membership recruitment/rush function.

So, if your hubby wants to root for that team in letters (as much as I dislike the team), go for it!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, my wonderful brothers!! This was, of course, the answer I was hoping for, but y'all's input makes it all the better!

Randy, you are more than welcome to come down to Fairfax and watch with us ANY time! We go to Glory Days in Burke and are happy for the company! PM me any time you want to come and watch! And WHEN (not IF!!) the Pats are in the SuperBowl, we're having a party!! Honestly, we're having one anyway, so consider this my personal invitation to you and your wife!! Nothing like watching the big game on a 42" plasma with homemade chili in the crock pot!!!

Senusret I and Jamie, that invitation goes for y'all, too!! I'll be sure to get a picture taken this weekend and show the letters off! I'm so flattered that he thought of it!!

Again, thanks to everyone who took the time to answer and help calm my worries!!
Hugs all around!!

My hubby is getting his 'first set of letters' for Christmas. He became an advisor last January, and was given some letters from a friend that don't fit him anymore, but I bought him a set of his very own that I'm gonna be surprising him with next week. Black tshirt (he wears a lot of black) with the letters in royal blue and old glory gold. He's gonna be so surprised! (and I'm not worried about posting that here, he never reads this board)

I don't have an answer for you about the letters, but wanted to shake your virtual hand for being a Pats fan.

To the "haters" (I have never in my life used that term before...it feels a little contrived to me, but I feel it's appropriate here) - you're all just jealous!

I loves me my Patriots!

Thanks! I actually pledged AXiD my freshman year of college, but got sick the last week of classes (before initiation). After my sophmore year, my parents stopped paying for college, and I ended up at a state school where I pledged Gamma Sig. Becoming an AXiD is coming full circle for me, and it's an an honor to be offered membership. I am very lucky to know (and soon belong to) both wonderful organizations.

Dead wrong. Please do not allow me to see anyone from my chapter with letters on and alcohol in their hands. They know better anyway.

Hold the phone.....please re-read my initial post. I made it very clear that I do not drink, but there would be alcohol at the table. In all my years as a member of two different GLOs, I have never worn anything that could identify me as a member of either if there was even the slightest possibility that a drink would end up in my hands. As it turned out, there was only one drink at the table all night, so it was more or less a moot point.
