Grades!!!HELP
I need help trying to get our members more interested in grades. we have our chapter standards at a 2.5, yet there are about 15 guys who dont get above a 2.5. how can we get these members to do better. study hours dont work, they are a waste of time for us. we could start taking things away, but i dont know that some people would try harder. what can we do, please help!!!

Something you can do that is restrict their membership privliges until they get their grades up or start utilizing study hours or even just put more effort forth. Tell them no social privleges, no formal, no intramurals until their grades meet standards set - no exceptions!

we have the same problem in my chapter, study hours don't work, either because no one goes, or no one actually STUDIES during those hours. you can try restrictions, but that makes the president/scholarship chair look like a jerk, especially if even one exception gets through.
The other way is to reward those that do their hours and improve their grades, take the scholars out to dinner one night on the chapter, deduct money off of the spring fomal costs if you have one, or simply pass out "smarties" at the next meeting for those that did well. Perhaps a combination of positive and negative reinforcement would be best.
Baiscally it all sums down to one sentence:
"You can't help the fraternity if you're on academic probation."

I have to agree with you GMUTeKE - positive reinforcment is probably going to work a lot better and help keep tension down for the scholarship/academic chair - who is only doing their job in enforcing the minimum GPA. The positive and negative thing will work too - when someone gets a good grade, studies for a certain amount of time, gets their GPA up or even goes to class if theyre the slacker type, even a verbal praise could go a long way. i like the ideas of taking a group of hardworkers out to dinner, or money of formal! great ideas!

Get brothers keepers, someone in the same major, maybe even taking the same classes to help them out and make sure they're working at it. after grades come out, give some prize for doing well. the last few years in my chapter, you got half a pizza for a 3.3, and a whole pizza for a 3.7. you could have a dinner, where those that got above a certain gpa get steak, and those below get something like hotdogs.
one of our rules for probation is no drinking during the week, period. for suspension, no drinking at all. now, of course they can go somewhere else and drink, but if a guy comes back to the house drunk, and someone sees him and wants to do something about it, he can be fined. It's a $25 fine per offense. It may sound bad, but this rule is usually enough to at least get people to think about it, and not even because they can't get drunk, but they can't even have a beer while watching a football game or to celebrate anything or whatever. it depends on the person though. obviously, the non drinkers could care less, but if social privelages were taken away, that could work. i think positive reenforcement is the better plan though.

Study tables in my sorority didn't work. I didn't make grades my first semester of college so I didnt' get to keep my position. Does your house do that? I know for me it was embarressing to give up my position, but it worked out because my grades improved and I was able to foucs on some other issues I was having. I know girls with good grades had fewer study hours. Whoever said they don't think there brothers would care if they had privelages revoked- maybe they don't need to be in your fraternity then. If they aren't going to make an effort then they don't deserve to be in your house.A brother/sisterhood is about helping eachother out by not making grades they are hurting your house. My chapter kicks out memebers if they achieve below a 2.3 in 3 consecutive semesters. I
