Smile Southern Style

I am a West Coaster that will be heading to NC this fall for college so I am curious as to what the style trends/must haves are for the South. Since it is pretty hot and humid where I will be does anyone have any makeup tips/products that will be better suited for that type of weather? Thanks!

Hi magolia
It really depends on which school you attend. I would have to say ECU is very caught up in trends.
As for make up get the smudge proof kind and min. the amount you use, esp if you are really active or sweat alot.
personally in the summer-- I try to avoid fondation or I use the speciality kind mixed with lotion. I also wear waterproof/ smudge proof mascara and eyeshadow.
also alot of my friends with naturally wavey hair use frizzies.
hope this helps

I'm from the deep south (Alabama) and i agree w/ what KDgirlie said, especially about foundation. It gets so hot down here. just walking to my car in the driveway makes me sweat. foundation ends up looking nasty and cakey. I think basic clothes trends are probably the same, but i could be wrong. what's hot right now here is white capri's w/ slits, beaded capris, straw type shoes, cute spaghetti strap or halter top tops. lol. i dunno maybe its just me. my dad used to live in NC and it snowed in the winter, which it doesnt usually here, so that affects winter clothes b/c it's colder.

Clinique's workout makeup is GREAT for the heat!

Thanks for your advice! I have used the workout makeup in the past just because I am pretty athletic, but have been using something else lately so I will give it another try. Do any of you know much about the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill? The clock is ticking down for when I head back there so I am pretty nervous!
Thank you again!

I'm from the Deep South (North Florida=Lower Alabama). It really surprises me that women here will go in full makeup during the summer! I tried it here after a winter away (I go to school in RI), and it made me feel yicky! It's pretty easy to get used to cooler weather, but I digress.

Clothing: Pastels. I wear pastels ALL THE TIME. I've never really been into capris, so I can't endorse those. Here, thong sandals are very popular.

Plus, I've noticed that outward "status" symbols are more common in the South (at least among youngsters). I see more tee shirts emblazoned with emblems here than I see up North. I'm not saying that you should dress like that or anything, but it was a culture shock. Just preparin' ya...

Grew up in Arkansas, went to college in Mississippi, now live in NC.

All of these ladies are right. Light make-up, capris are very big here now. Spaghetti strap tops can keep you from melting. Most of the high school and college-age girls I see have scrunchies on hand to put up their hair when it gets too hot to wear it down. At my college, we wore shorts and T-shirts to class. We would have melted gettig across campus to class if we had put on anything dressier, like khakis or polo shirts. Those cute little sundresses are big here, too. Whatever you wear- think cool.

Cool

I have alot of friends that I went to high school with that now go to Chapel Hill. I love the style there, it's very preppy (hence my name, lol). There is alot of JCrew, BReps, and Ann Taylor for day; Bebe, Tibi, Shoshanna and Trina Turk for night. For early fall, capri's, good black slides, khaki shorts, colored tees, and cute sundresses should get you through. Also Rainbow flipflops are very popular, and since CH is a "walkers" campus, I'd recommend them if you like the look, they're sooooo comfy! Custo tops are also big right now. I have one friend that's spent over 2,000 dollars on handbags alone, so I'd say for girls a status bag is a must, Kate Spade is the usual, Prada and Louis Vuitton Pochette bags are popular too. The heat doesn't really get to me anymore because I've lived here so long, but CH has an aweome Sephora for any last minute neccessities that you may need, and their salespeople are soooooo helpful! I think that if you don't need much coverage, Cliniques Barely makeup is a great choice, it's what I use, and I havn't had any problems with it. Base, lipgloss, eyeliner(if needed), bronzer and mascara are really all you need, if that much. Welcome to NC by the way, I go to ECU (about 2 1/2 hours from CH)! Will you be rushing?

Cool

I've lived in New Orleans my entire life. The style down here is pretty casual, but conservative and comfy. No one dresses up for class at LSU unless its for a presentation or they have to work later on.

Lots of girls have the Kate Spade Sam bag, but others have never heard of her! Mignon Faget jewelry is our alternative to Tiffany's.

For makeup, I usually just wear Clinque's Oil-Free foundation year round. Its pretty light and doesn't feel all nasty in the heat. Clean hair is all you need to deal with the heat - humidity makes hair greasy in no time. Claw clips are a lifesaver at times

Preppie,

Thanks so much for the advice about UNC style, it definitely constrasts to the state school I went to this past year..haha! So do you know much about rush at UNC? I will be a sophomore transfer at UNC because I didn't get in the first time I applied so I spent a year at another school. I did go through formal rush, received a bid, but I pretty much already knew that I was leaving that school so would that hurt me? If I do rush I will probably wait until the spring so I have time to settle in a bit since it is a LONG way from home!! ECU is in Charlotte right? I have family in Gastonia so I know that area a little..haha!

Thanks!

Aimee, I know you prefer Tiffany's to Mignon Faget, but I have to tell you that I am now ADDICTED to her stuff! After you initially mentioned her in the "Sorority Girls' Necessities" thread and then sent me a link for her website, I ordered a catalog and was absolutely floored by how original and beautiful her pieces were. I ordered the tulip necklace (hey, I'm an old sorority girl, but a sorority girl nonetheless )two freshwater pearl necklaces, a ring with matching earrings and bracelet and the sterling silver New Orleans charm bracelet. What a great discovery! I have gotten so many compliments on the pieces and they just feel so GOOD and heavy when I wear them. So I just wanted to say thanks for introducing MF to the boards!

Oh, I'm so happy to be of help ! I know alot about the school, I almost went there myself at one point! UNC has an awesome Greek system. My best friends big sister is an ADPi there, as well as four good friends from HS. I have a few friends in Tri Delt there, one in Phi Mu, and one in Pi Phi, plus, I dated a Phi Delt there for quite a while so I know a bit about their system. Actually, ECU is in Greenville, I'm thinking you're thinking about UNCC, which is in Charlotte....trust me, mention ECU at UNC, and you'll get a few responses, every year we get Carolina people down for our Halloween celebration and often we road trip down to UNC for Carolina's....It's INSANITY at both locations! As for the rushing thing, all of my friends rushed as Freshmen, during formal. I've heard that a good amount of Sophmores go through too b/c there are quite a few transfers. I've heard that it's best to go thru during formal, and that REC's will definitely help, esp. if you want ADPi or Tri Delt. Most of the houses do have informal though, I know for sure that DZ did, I'd have to ask my friends about the others. Here's the link to UNC's greek life page:http://www.unc.edu/depts/greek/, but I'm sure you've already found it! Since you went through and turned down a bid at the old school, you should be just fine, if it's been one year (correct me if I'm wrong you guys in GC land.....)and I don't really see how it could hurt you or how they'd even know unless you brought it up. UNC may not even have that sorority on campus, so it should be just fine. If you have anymore questions, feel free! By the way, some of my fathers family is originally from Gastonia....small world! And just a random question, will you be living at Granville Towers?

Me too! I love MF. Did you know that she is a Tulane (Newcomb College) Chi Omega? She designed Newcomb's graduation ring which is an intertwined oak branch. I think it has an acorn on the top but I can't remember. The Tulane (Newcomb)grads with whom I work didn't get one. Really unique.
