Omega Psi Phi brother Thabiti Boone is in the running for the CNN Heroes honor for those who make a significant impact on youth. Boone, who holds both undergraduate and law degrees, spends a lot of his time engaged in literacy programs in depressed, desparate, inner city communities like the one he grew up in in Brooklyn, NY. His story is inspiring. Born to a 13-year-old, he was a star basketball star in high school who was set to go to Florida. In the midst of this, his girlfriend became pregnant and he made a decision to seek to gain custody of his baby daughter which destroyed his scholarship offer at UF; but he went to Rochester, with baby in tow. He describes his story of going to classes, practice and caring for his child. And, on occasion, when the basketball team went on away trips, he got female friends in the dorm to care for her. He's continued to reach back to help those, like himself, who are in dire straits as a motivational speaker. minister, youth advocate, and literacy advocate. He came to speak to the young men in the youth mentoring program my graduate chapter of Omega Psi Phi started this year, and he really connected with the boys and their parents.
