Statement of the Problem

African-American males are at risk. The evidence of this is the staggering statistics negatively depicting them as a group of people who have been unsuccessful at navigating through a culture that is predominately white.

America is a capitalistic country primarily controlled by white males. In a capitalistic society, money is an essential element for living a comfortable life. In America, the odds of one living a comfortable life are tremendously increased by successfully matriculating through the educational system.

"Today, education is perhaps the most important function of state and local governments...it is a principal instrument in awakening the child to cultural values, in preparing him for later professional training, and in helping him adjust normally to his environment...it is doubtful that any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life if he is denied the opportunity of an education. Among the many children in America who are at risk and likely to lack success in school-most often because they lack authentic educational opportunities-the African American male student stands alone in terms of the accumulation of negative factors affecting his future.”

“Due to the history of racial discrimination in the United States, according to Jencks & Phillips (1998), African Americans began to doubt their own intellectual ability, began to define academic success as white people's prerogative, and began to discourage their peers, perhaps unconsciously, from emulating white people in academic striving, i.e., from acting white.”

Becoming successful through traditional methods is seen as one leaving his culture and taking on another's culture. Abandoning one's culture is seen as “selling-out. Not wanting to be ostracized by their own race, many African Americans, consciously or unconsciously choose avenues that hinders their successful navigation through society.

African American men need to be trained and provided with specific strategies, so they can effectively model and teach surviving and thriving skills to young black males. If African American men do not model and train young African American males, they will be doomed to a vicious cycle of repeated societal failure. Such damnation adversely affects all of mankind.

African American men must not allow young black males to become paralyzed within the American culture – paralyzed due to negative peer pressure and a lack of understanding of how to be empowered in a capitalistic society. Black men must be trained to provide strategic leadership to young males. Young black males must learn how to thrive using the rules that govern the system where they live and must learn how to make the system work for them.

The Male Protégé Program Goals

Goals: The Male Protégé Program (TMPP) is an extension of our Mandated Scholarship Program designed to inform young intelligent juniors and seniors in High School about positive male role models in the community. For example: Someone like members of the Chapter, who are providing services that could impact the entire world, (teachers, administrators, engineers, etc.). The community needs to know that role models like us will take time to show parents and their children (Young Males) the right way to approach the challenges of life.

Project WHEN: Wealth, Health, and Education, NOW!

Wealth: Our young males need accurate, clear, and precise strategies for navigating through and working in a capitalistic society. Parents will share their philosophy for prioritizing the family’s financial assets and resources with their participating son.

Net Value - Liabilities = Wealth: When your outgo exceeds your income, your upkeep becomes your downfall.

III John 1:2a - Beloves I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper…

Health: Our young males need guidance as they strive for a healthy Spiritual, physical, and emotional life. Parents will share with their participating son their philosophy for healthy living; Spiritual, physical, and emotional.

III John 1:2b - …and be in health, even as thy soul prosper.

Education: Parents will share their educational philosophy for successful living in a capitalistic society with their participating son. Education should not be looked upon as the mere acquisition of academic subject matter, but as a part of life itself--Dewey, 1902

II Timothy 2:15 - Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

NOW: In America, one’s odds of living a comfortable life is tremendously increased by successfully matriculating through the educational system. The odds of one living a comfortable life in America is tremendously increased by successfully matriculating through the educational system. Parents will assist the church and community in addressing the crisis plaguing the lack of positive black-male role models and commit to sustain participation in The Male Protégé Program.

Though l am not rich, I can’t be bought.

Hard work and faith.

Thanks, Bruh, for posting this. My present chapter has recently started a mentoring program for middle and high school Black and Latino boys. We're in the process of structuring it more and the information here is helpful. Peace and God bless!
