To the group
IMHO, the real issue with these non-NPHC sponsored stepshows is that, for the pursuit of a small prize (usually less than $2000), we allow our organizations to be pimped.
Many of these larger stepshows net tens of thousands of dollars -- most often with these proceeds going directly into the pockets of the promoters. Thats a real problem for me because usually, these promoters have no interest in the philanthropies that our organizations support. So what happens is that our chapters that participate in these events spend a tremendous amount of time preparing for an event that ultimately has no real value to our collective reason for existing.
Don't get me wrong - I have always enjoyed (and continue to enjoy) step shows. They are an absolute blast to attend and/or participate in. We must however, realize that stepping is a small part of what we are about. Anytime our efforts can generate that kind of cash, we need to be more mindful of where the money goes.
