Post Non-NPHC hosted Stepshows

divine niners - how do you feel about non nphc or black greek councils hosting our stepshows?

i dont know all the logistics of it, but when entertainment companies or 3 parties host our shows, #1 where and to whom does the profits go? #2 is it exploitive if they use our name and our talent, but dont give back to our orgs?

just my personal experience, 3 party orgs usually dont treat the performers well, sometimes teams dot get paid right, and because they arent greek sometime proper protocol isnt heeded (using wrong nicknames...)

any feedback?

that's an awful lot of "free" stuff going on for something with no entry fee. i wonder what the ticket prices look like.

PrettyPoodle6, I've not personally stepped in a show sponsored by a 3rd party, but I know a couple of greeks who have who say they wouldn't step in one again because of the reasons you mentioned. But at the same time, we need to be aware of who's running the show, meaning finding out if there are any NPHC members on staff who can help iron out the logistics and help ensure things run smoothly and finding out where the profits go. If they say the profits are going to a homeless shelter or some other charatible cause, then I'd want to get in touch with that charity before hand just to make sure things are legit.

To the group

IMHO, the real issue with these non-NPHC sponsored stepshows is that, for the pursuit of a small prize (usually less than $2000), we allow our organizations to be pimped.

Many of these larger stepshows net tens of thousands of dollars -- most often with these proceeds going directly into the pockets of the promoters. Thats a real problem for me because usually, these promoters have no interest in the philanthropies that our organizations support. So what happens is that our chapters that participate in these events spend a tremendous amount of time preparing for an event that ultimately has no real value to our collective reason for existing.

Don't get me wrong - I have always enjoyed (and continue to enjoy) step shows. They are an absolute blast to attend and/or participate in. We must however, realize that stepping is a small part of what we are about. Anytime our efforts can generate that kind of cash, we need to be more mindful of where the money goes.
