Morality Question: Revenge or Justice?
....before you reply...please read thru and think carefully....
Here is the setup:
You and your spouse lose your 6 year old son to a serial killer.
The killer does 20 years in prison and is released.
During this time...life with you and ur spouse is rocky.....fill in the blanks as you chooose...
6 months after...you get an invitation to join a group that has something in common....
You and your spouse go and find out that the invitee is the serial killer themselves....along with 6 other families of murdered children are 'members' of this group
All tell of how thier lives were impacted by the murders of thier kids...divorces, going into poverty, mental breakdowns...etc
The serial killer shows IRREFUTABLE video taped evidence that they did not commit the murder but was framed...why? Because the real killer taped themselves committing the murders and hid the tapes all these years.
here is the fun part:
The framed person tells you that at the location where you are, the real killer is locked up in a room at that same location and gives you a choice....
Exact your revenge here and now in whatever fashion you choose (giving courtsey that the others there want to do the same)....or let justice do its work, not lay a finger on him, knowing that it could possibly take years to get him convicted....WITH the possibility that his punishment may not fit the crime...of course the catch is...no one must ever reveal what was done regardless if they do or dont take part and measures will be taken so that no one snitches...
What choice would you make?

We're on the same page. What I'd want is revenge, but I couldn't live with knowing that I did something. FWIW, I had a cat who was shot not once, but twice, and while I think I know who did it, I'm not sure. I keep saying that I never want to find out exactly who did it, because I can't be responsible for how I'd react.

You could beat the shit out of the person to release anger. Other than that I wouldn't think of anything else. It is not going to bring back the dead.

Justice, absolutely. From my stance of faith, while the punishment may not fit the crime in this lifetime, I know the real killer would have to answer for what he did. "Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord..." I'm sure in His perfection, He'd come up with a better punishment than I ever could. I would be more concerned with the framed guy, to tell you the truth. How awful to lose 20 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit! Seems that all of my problems (rocky marriage, mental breakdown, etc) would pale in comparison.

That's a tough one. I might find it hard to trust a justice system that convicted someone on false evidence and gave that serial killer (even if convicted under false evidence) only 20 years....that should be an automatic life sentence. But if I had the opportunity to be in the room alone with the killer of my kid, I would start beating him and I probably wouldn't stop....I couldn't very well live with myself with that option.
I'd opt for a chance at justice and hope for the best.

Considering that there are six other families there, plus the innocent guy who spent 20 years in jail... I'm pretty sure someone in the group would opt for revenge. So, I'll say justice, mainly because it probably wouldn't get to that point. Someone would kill the guy.

Justice, revenge will do nothing in the end. Just add more mental anguish to the family. Hard to say it, time to move on and put the pieces back together.

If you want justice, HOW can the last sentence happen? Because in notifying authorities so JUSTICE can be done means SOMEONE must reveal what was done. So the "measures will be taken so that no one snitches" line just doesn't equate in the scenerio.
"I came here and learned the SOB locked in that room was the real killer, and here is the evidence proving it".
To not reveal what was done would get nothing done.
My instinct is to notify the authorities asap, and run the risk of the "no snitches" stuff...but I want further clarification about that.
I believe that death is NOT a punishment, it is a release to return to the higher spirit (where we are all headed)...and I don't want that killer to get an early out from the lessons of life. In my mind, he gets detention big time.

ok...this is where I tell you where the question came from.
Movie called Lady Vengeance, a Korean flick released in 2005 and on DVD.
This is where this whole scenario came from.
