Skit Ideas

We are trying to come up with a new skit for recruitment next fall. Any suggestions?

What have you done in the past? Why are you interested in changing (update material? produce different results? group size restrictions?)?

The more info you give us, the more helpful we can be.

Also, you could check out the 24/7 filing cabinet - it has (at least, it used to) several skits there.

We've been doing "Aladin" for the past couple of years, and council and our CAB just think it's time for a change. It's a bit dated and for lack of a better word, cheesy.

We decided we could either spend the money and time updating the costumes, music, set, ect. OR we could just come up with a new skit.

Other sororities on campus use the Hard Rock theme, Wizard of Oz, The Little Mermaid, and Grease.

I've checked the filing cabinet, and I got a couple of ideas. We want it to be fun and exciting, but we also would like it to be meaningful and show what our sisterhood is about.

Also, in the skit we're doing now it has lots of dancing and acrobatics, and that is one thing PNMs really seem to enjoy.

So any suggestions?

What event is this for? Is this night very competitive? Just a few questions. If you have done Aladin in the past, you may want to stay with a movie or television show theme. It won't be as difficult for the sisters to adjust to the new theme if your chapter eases them into it. My suggestions would be something like what my chapter used to do--we called it KD TV, where two sisters role play being freshmen and watching television shows. The shows can relate to what your chapter does for fun, what kinds of events you have, and what the best part of being a KD is all about. Actually, we transitioned from this event to an event that I planned called "The KD Sisterhood Awards," which was very similar to the MTV movie awards or any other award show. When both events were refined, we actually constructed a gigantic television screen out of felt and hung it from the ceiling. Sisters performed their skits behind it. It was fun to watch and the new members always really enjoyed it. One event that did NOT go over so well: KD in the 80s. Even though we all had a blast dressing up in 80s gear, it kind of freaked the PNMs out a little bit. Good luck!

This is the 3rd day during our recruitment, and the 1st time cuts have been made. I would say it's competitive.

Another aspect we always include during our skit is a video. It's different pictures from events during the year with music background. In the past we've included a thoughtful message at the end of the video. It's something that sets us apart, so I'd like to keep that aspect.

Also, we're limited on space because our chapter room is in an L shape. We have a stage built that fits in the corner.

I think kathykd's suggestion of the KD Awards Show sounds like it would work really well for your situation. Especially if you're wanting to include a video - all awards shows have that video montage section where they highlight someone special (in your case, maybe you could highlight the aspect of sisterhood, or philanthropy, or whatever your chapter's strengths are).

You could present (to sisters, not PNMs obviously) diamond-shaped awards (And the nominees for Best Smile-Invoker are: Sister Sarah for always having a joke ready in any situation; KD Kallie for her spectacular imitation of State U's mascot - even without the costume; Emerald Emily for her beautiful rendition of "Follow Me". And the Diamond goes to...) You could videotape short clips of each of the nominees doing her thing like they do in the awards shows.

With the chapter room being in the shape of an L, there could even be a Red Carpet area where different sisters are interviewed before the program.

The possibilities are endless, but I think kathykd's onto something really good here.

Thank you, SydneyK! The possibilities truly are endless with a theme like this. Actually, the CDC liked it the most of all the events we had when she visited that year.

Instead of a red carpet, we had a "green carpet" and the dress was semiformal-formal. We had table settings with long-stemmed white roses in them and we also did video montages. I toyed with the idea of an ice sculpture, but that was a bit too much for our budget. The concept of a chandelier being rented also arose, but again, we ran into budget restrictions. We scattered diamonds, emeralds, and pearls across the tables, and also included white candles (which I don't know if you'd want to do, because of risk management issues, etc). KD golden stars were hung from the ceiling, with three stars above the podium ("with three stars up above--there's a KD crest for every girl that's best..."), and we served movie-inspired snacks, a bit more upscale.

We gave out awards in the exact same manner SydneyK suggested, too. Our only problem was some ladies not taking it seriously enough, but that can be avoided through more rehearsals. As much as we hate to say it, you really do need to "sell" who your chapter is to get the PNMs to want to join your sisterhood. If you have members that are not memorizing their lines or laughing at what you are trying to do, it's not going to be effective.

Ultimately, the positive effect of this style party is also a more intimate atmosphere to discuss with new members what your sisterhood is about, in a smaller-group setting. One reason I switched 3rd Event to the Sisterhood Awards from KDTV was that for KDTV, the PNMs sat in an "audience" style manner, and they didn't get to TALK to us as much as we wanted them to.

Dependent upon the personality of your chapter, this could work very well for you. However, you could face some opposition if any of the ladies don't want to wear dresses. Luckily, that argument could be subverted by offering the option of tux-style attire, too. Message me if you want to bounce any ideas off of me or ask any questions about the event.
