Missing part of rush

Hello everyone. It's been very informative and interesting to read all of the information on this site! I'm going through rush next week with FSU. I'm excited...but nervous at the same time. I'm going in as a Jr. which I know can be somewhat of a disadvantage. Also, I have to go teach baton in Holland the 2nd half of the week. I accepted to go teach there over a year ago, but really it's an opportunity I can't pass up. Head of Recruitment called me and said I was okay to rush even though I'd be missing the last part of the week, but said it would be difficult. I'm just hoping to meet some nice people...and hopefully find somewhere that accepts me. I'm very interested in being apart of a sorority, I just hope they don't get the impression that I don't care since I have to leave. Do you think I'm being unrealistic? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks for reading

I don't know how FSU would handle this, but I know when I was in school, we had a woman go through rush who had to miss pref night due to the marching band being out of town. She wrote a letter to each chapter that had invited her to preference explaining why she was unable to attend but that she was interested in being a member.
The letter was very well written and our rush chair read the letter to the chapter before prefs started so that we knew why she was not there. She ended up getting a bid and was a great addition!

Thank you that sounds like a great idea!!! I'm the feature twirler for FSU so I'm also having to work around band camp too! It's a crazy week.

great advice

Love the letter idea. When I first read your post I thought, "uh oh...not good." But, you might actually stand out--especially if they realize you are honoring a commitment (which is what a sorority is). So it could work for you!

Some additional advice--be prepared to explain how you plan to meet your twirling obligations and your new member/sister obligations. It sure sounds like you are busy, and that may be a red flag to someone, wondering if you really have the time to be in a sorority. Your involvement in twirling is a positive for sure though!

At my Chapter we take this on a case by case basis. We consider the circumstances and the PNM. Probably the most important thing is if it was uncontrollable. We also consider the reason for being absent. Here are a couple of examples.

Panhellenic informed us that there were a few PNMs missing parties due to doctor's appointments. If we were told it was some sort of specialist and it would be nearly impossible to reschedule that would be one thing. But Recruitment dates have been set since last spring and one would hope when scheduling a routine doctor's appointment you would know ahead of time it was a conflict.

Another PNM missed a whole day because her brother was being deployed to Iraq. I certainly hope every Chapter on campus was understanding in not penalizing this young woman for wanting to see her brother leave to serve his -- make that OUR country. I'd also hope they would be understanding that she was probably not in the best mindframe to be going through Recruitment at all. With three wonderful brothers of my own, I can't imagine how that would feel. Then to rush on top of that?

First off going as a Jr. can be tough.

But, you are so involved with what you are doing and that is also so important for not only You but the School.

While it sounds like you would be in said Sorority for a short time, you could and would be an asset to them to show what Our Sisters do!

Go for it. If they do not take you, it is their lose, not yours.

But nothing but the very best for and to you!!!!!

FSU

Thank you for the responses! Today was the 1st day at FSU. My group visited 8 houses today, we visit 7 tomorrow. I feel in love with three houses and I'm eager to see the rest tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get invited back to the ones I really like for Wednesday before I leave for Holland.

As a Rho Gamma, I had a girl in my group miss round 3 of recruitment for a "family event". Justin Timberlake happened to be in town the very same day. If I were going to the concert, I would leave at the same time this PNM said she would have to leave. Before she left, she came to the Armory before the parties (wearing a low cut green tunic tank with black leggings and leopard print pumps) and ranked her chapters for the next round. I had a suspicion that she was not going to a family event. She had a full schedule of six very desirable chapters for skit, but only got one invite to preference. Fortunately for her, it was her favorite chapter and she did end up with a bid there.

This PNM was very lucky. With no documentation, she could have easily been cut by all of her remaining chapters. However, she was very personable and was only cut by 2 chapters (out of 14) before skit round. She really made a connection with members of the chapter that she pledged during recruitment and she was also a freshman.

It's a huge risk to take to miss part of recruitment for any reason, stupid or legit, and you will probably be cut by competitive chapters in particular. Competitive chapters have to make the most cuts and they often have to look for a reason, any reason to cut someone. It's a long shot for you being a junior to begin with, but you'll never know if it'll work out if you don't at least try. Good luck to you.

I would think she'd be back in time for classes to start...which was this past Monday.
