Arizona State Rush

My daughter's good friend is beginning rush today at Arizona State. She is from a non-greek family but I have talked so much about my sorority experience she decided to give it a try. I gathered her recs and will keep my fingers crossed that she has a GREAT experience. She is an incredible young woman and any house would be very luck to have her as a member.

Good luck to her!

I am an ASU alum and will be helping with recruitment. All the chapters on campus are amazing (of course I'm a little biased towards my own ).

Have you thought about posting her rush story.

I would love to read an ASU one, since I'm on the "other side".

ASU Rush

I will indeed. I talked to her tonight and she was going out with her rush group for dinner. (I thought rush started today, but it is actually the 31st) She was so excited after the first meeting and feels she has already connected with girls in her rush group. Though I am confident she will pledge, even if she does not, she has already gained from the rush experience. She attended a large high school, she was still a little overwhelmed by the masses of people at ASU. This seems to have brought it down to size. She promised to call me tomorrow after the first round of parties. Stay tuned!

My dad went to ASU and I randomly met some of the ASU Kappas last time I was in Phoenix. I went to lunch with my grandparents and our waitress noticed I had on a Kappa shirt! She invited me to the "house" and I met some other sisters. So they have a special place in my heart. Good luck to your daughter's friend!

Update after first round

Last night the pnm, Sunshine, went to all twelve houses. I am a very uncreative person, but since I love shopping I will use stores for the houses she is interested in joining:

Nordstrom (my house)
Neiman Marcus
Bloomingdale's
Macy's
Barney's
Cache
Dillard's
Icara
Sophora
Lord & Taylor

Sunshine had a GREAT time at the houses and when I talked to her this morning she had fallen in love with Neiman Marcus. She liked the others but she felt a very special connection with Neiman's. She just picked up her schedule and sadly Neiman's did not invite her back. It is Neiman's loss but makes me sad for her. When I asked Sunshine about her visit to Neiman's, she only met the one girl that rushed her. As she only met the one girl, I am sure that hurt her. However, she did have a nice rec from a good friend, so I am not sure what went wrong. She was disappointed but was very positive about the rest of her schedule. That was her only drop.
Last night many of the girls in her rush group really liked Icara, but she was left cold. However, she is going back there today. I told her the person that rushes her can make a big difference. She might go to Icara today and fall in love with the house because she is being rushed by different members. She said she would keep an open mind.

Today she is going to:

Nordstrom
Bloomingdale
Macy's
Barney's
Cache
Dillard's Icara
Dophora
Lord and Taylor

Day 2 is underway and she promised to call me after it is over to give her impressions. I know Sunshine so well, that I am as anxious about her rush as I would be if it were my own daughter (well maybe not QUITE). She is such a lady and will be a great leader and example of sisterhood for any house she joins.

Day 2

Okay, Day 2 is over and Sunshine reported in. She selected five houses for the skit parties today. Her list is as follows:
  • Bloomingdales - She loves this house. Right now they are her top choice. She was picked up by the same member who rushed her the first day and this member made an effort to introduce her to a lot of other members.
  • Nordstrom - She really likes this house, but there may be some social problems that the house has encountered. That is a little bit of a concern, but she is trying to keep an open mind and will ask at the house today if the rumor is true and what it means as a member.
  • Barney's - The girls were really nice and she would like the opportunity to go back again. She has met quite a few girls, but yesteray they seemed to lack energy (of course in Arizona it is a tad HOT!).
  • Macy's - The girls were nice but did not present their philanthropy well
  • Sophora - The girls seemed very nice, but she just did not feel that there was a connection.
Icara still left her cold. She said that even the pnm's that had been comfortable there the 1st day were not impressed the second time around. Dillard's she really did not have anything to say - no real strong impression either way. Lord and Taylor's was a real struggle for her. She said the members just did not seem to "have it together" and were disorganized. Sunshine said she found herself trying to keep the conversation going. Again, I told her that it all depends upon the members that rush her. There may have been some other pnm's that had members that were very engaging.

She will be keeping an open mind, but her favorites are Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom and Barney's, with Macy's and Sophora rounding out her top choices for invitations to return.

Sunshine was invited back to all her favorites. However, I was mistaken about her favorites: Macy's, Nordstrom's and Bloomingdale's. I told her that might even change after today. Sunshine also told me that she heard about Nordstrom's "social probation" from another girl. I told her to ask at the house today when she is at the party. Sunshine did say that each day it becomes clearer where she is drawn. If I were betting, I would say that Bloomingdale's is her hearts desire, but we will see her impression after today. I cannot imagine rushing and trying to look nice in the desert heat!!

Just got a call from Sunshine. She loved today and is really excited about preference tomorrow night. They attend two parties and she put down Nordstrom's and Bloomingdale's as her top choices. However she said that she could also see herself in Macy's or Barney's. I guess Sophora house did their whole skit on "Legally Blond" and that really turned her off. She also asked at the Nordstrom house about the "social issue" and was told that had occured more than a year ago and that they were not on any sort of probation - academic or otherwise.

Preference

I was on pins and needles as I did not hear from Sunshine this afternoon when she received her invitations. I was unsure if she was invited to Norstrom's and Blomingdale's or if she was disappointed. However, I just got a call, and she had left her phone at the dorm. She was so excited. Obviously, Preference was her favorite party. She put it so well when she said, "It was like they were trying to impress ME." I assured her that is exactly what they were trying to do. She still loves both houses and would be comfortable in either. However, she said that after tonight, she really loved Nordstrom's. She said that she was greeted my name without looking at a nametag and the active who rushed her was so much fun. She loved the ceremony. It conveyed the sisterhood, but was not "over the top." She still enjoyed Bloomingdale's, but her heart is at Nordy's. Tomorrow is bid day. The activities surrounding the bids start at 3:30 and she promised to call me as soon as she receives her bid. I know she will be happy either place, but I would like her to be where she really felt the connection tonight. I will post her new house tomorrow.I want to congratulate ASU for the conclusion of their rush. I know that it is a lot of hard work for everyone, but even if the pnms decide not to pledge a house, they have met so many new people that will help take the size of the school down to a smaller scale.

So she only attended 2 parties? Pref. was a 3 party day. Did she suicide or did she (wisely) put down all the parties she attended on her pref card?
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Nordstroms. I just wish I could figure out which house it is by your clues (which actually have been good, because I can't figure it out ).

ASU Preference

ASU is one of the schools that still does a two preference format. I know when I talked to her last night she put down Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom's and her choice to preference and then listed Macy's, Barney's and Sophora in that order. I was so very proud of her. She always kept an open mind and did not let getting released from her original "favorite" as rejection. Sunshine knew she wanted to be in a sorority and trusted the process. She is keeping her fingers crossed that she will not get a phone call from her gamma chi (or rho chi or whatever they are called there) that she did not get a bid from her two preference houses. I cannot imagine, but as we have all read, it does happen. However, she told me last night she knows she also could be happy in Macy's or Barney's. Sophora she was not so sure about after the skit. That seemed to really turn her off. I will be back tomorrow to let you know her house. I am keeping my fingers crossed for Nordstrom.
