Unhappy A sad day for Longwood College and Kappa Delta

Last week a major fire broke out on the Longwood College campus in Farmville, Virginia. Fortunately, only two minor injuries were reported. However, Longwood College (originally State Female Normal School)is the birthplace of 4 sororities: Kappa Delta, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Alpha Sigma Alpha.

Many buildings suffered major damage. Sadly, the room where Kappa Delta's 4 founders created the sorority in 1897 was destroyed. A part of KD's history is gone forever.
(I don't know the details about the other 3 sororities' founding sites.)

I hope you will all join me in wishing the students and alumni of Longwood College all the best.

For more information on the fire or to make a donation to the recovery fund visit:

How sad . I can only imagine how it must feel. I hope they can at least create some sort of memorial for the founders in place of the room .
Keep your chins up.
Fraternally,
Hootie

I currently live not too far from Longwood and my girlfriend attends school there (she's apart of a NPHC sorority there). I have spent A LOT of time there over this school year. The fire was truly devastating and sad even for a non-Longwood student/Farmville resident like myself.

I have seen the historic landmarker that states KD amongst others was founded there. To hear the historic landmark where the sorority began is destroyed is very disturbing.

I wish all the members of KD and all other people affected by the tragedy the best and I hope you all can move on.

GOD bless you all.

As a member of one of the Farmville Four, I know how devastating this fire was for all of the sorority members at Longwood. The Rotunda, a very important part of the school's history and Sigmas, was destroyed. I am sorry to hear that such a historic room was destroyed. It will live on in all of KD's heart though and we are here for all of you!

Fires can be so tough on groups. I'm VERY glad that there were no serious injuries. My prayers are with the sisters of KD and the other groups who lost treasured memories.

Best wishes to all the Alum of Longwood and the two students who were hurt.
KDgirlie said it best: Kappa Delta has a strong history that will never be forgotten, no matter if the room stands or not.
Thank you everyone for the support!

unforutantly We lossed some thing of great historical value. I am sadden that I will not get to take my road trip with my sisters and see our special room. But when I look at my sisters I can see the ideals of our founders in present day. I can imagen what it was like to sit in a room with my four friends and begin the tradition of KD that has so wonderfully affected so many womens lives. I love my KD and I feel horrible about our historical loss. But I see future in my rituals and love in our traditions.
I hope the other Longwood 4 can sucessfully navigate this tragdy.
AOT to KD's

So sorry to hear about the fire! I know how I would feel if anything ever happened to a Delta Zeta historical landmark... Just wanted to let you know that I'm thinking about all of you KD's.

In the Greek Bond,
Carrie
