Old Skool CG Reunion Thread
Maybe it's just me...but I miss the old CG.
When I came to GC, I was 19 and hoping to be a part of the DG Colony at NCSU. I gave out a lot of "identifying" information, but was not scared of anyone identifying me in real life. I loved the advice/friendships that CG gave me. I think as time passes, CG seems so much more hostile (especially toward new, and sometimes naive, members).
So holla if you were part of the Old Skool crowd...let's say before 2004 or so.

Oh! Me!
I only wish I had found GC before I had gone through rush. Man, some of my outfits were SO bad.

I joined GC in January 2003, the semester after I joined my GLO.

Co-sign. A sarong (it was a phase) over black jeans. That's all I'm saying.

I've been on GC for almost as long as I've been a working adult - 2001.
I don't really miss the old days. I've said this before and I'll say it again: a lot of NPHCers discounted the things I said before I was a member. And sometimes I will come across things I've said back then and how I was treated and I'll think damn, they really tried that, didn't they? And I laugh, not only because I was right all along, but because they are fat.
I am, on the other hand, disappointed in things which happened along the way which caused good people to leave. For a while, GC really could be a place where people knew your real name and it wouldn't hurt you. Now, I most definitely cringe every time a newbie posts their real name.
From an NPHC perspective, I think we've reached a better place where we aren't so hostile to people who aren't NPHC. As DrPhil and I say from time to time, GreekChat IS my lane so it's impossible to swerve as long as the discourse is respectful and productive. (She's fine, by the way, I know one of y'all was gonna have a fit when you noticed she hadn't posted lately.)
So that's that.

I'm glad to see that - I had been wondering where she was but I know she takes breaks. She didn't forget her password again, did she?
To be honest, I joined in 2004, so I guess I don't have much to add along "Old School" lines, but the real name thing makes me sad. I mean, I know quite a number of poster's real (at least first) names, but I would never think to call them by their real name on the forums anymore, and that was something that was more common when I was still a newb.
Most of the time I don't care what a poster's real name is but it makes me a little sad that we have to be so guarded. Of course, real names and linking between different social media sites/blogs is what leads to livejournal stalking, personal threats, etc etc by the cray crays.

I know I take a risk putting my stuff out there, but I know that doing what I'm doing, I've got to be willing to put myself out there. One nice thing, if I ever do "make it big" is that my husband's hometown is literally not even on the map, so I always have there to go hide from the paparazzi. Yes, I've thought of this.

I changed my username when I posted my rush story, but I've been around since 2001. I remember WD128's first threads about DG!

Having a job where I have to be a lot more careful about my clients knowing where I live and about my regular life has, I think, made me care a bit less about the e-stalking sort of thing, if only because I think I could handle whatever comes from that appropriately. I worry more about the RL safety issues, but even that is more of an awareness than a worry. I guess it's just a new perspective?
I think we still have really good discussions here, just not the ones started by our troll.
/2005 is SIX years ago guys. Totally old school.

Yea, my favorite threads are the ones that cause discussion (even when we all don't agree). There seemed to be more of those back in the day (listen to me...), but there are still enough to keep me coming back.

Also re: the name thing, I think that's more a sign of the intertubes now versus the intertubes in 2000. I used my real name in a lot of places on the intertubes in 2000, 2001, 2002 whereas now I only use it on facebook and linkedin, mostly because I have a little more control about what is seen on those pages about me. Sure, I want positive things to be on the intertubes about me using my real name (news articles, resume, etc), but I certainly don't want "Firstname Lastname says '[Trucker Language Redacted] your [Trucker Language Redacted] why the [Trucker Language Redacted] would you want to quit your [Trucker Language Redacted] GLO?!'"

I have been a member since 2001 but I never really posted that much until I became a chapter advisor around 2003/2004. I do agree that sometimes posters are very hostile to new posters on here. I hope I don't ever come off rude or mean!

Very true, people are much more used to going by there Usernames these days too.

^^^ Same here. On SM outlets that have my real name, I'm a little more cautious about what I say. When I'm using aliases/usernames, though, I can say what I really want to without too many repercussions.
ETA: Arrows should have been pointing to agzg's response.
