Even though you said caffeine doesn't work for you - have you tried freshly brewed espresso? That helped me a great deal.

What kind of caffeine are you talking about? Just coffee is weak, "wake ups" are a little stronger. Or there's pills you can take that ppl use when working out or cardio that gives energy. They pretty much all have the same stuff, effidrine and caffeine mostly. Some brands are "hyper cuts" or "Ignition"...they're available at a nutrition store that specializes in supplements. Take 2-3 a night and I'll guarantee you'll stay awake....USE WITH CAUTION! THESE ARE NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN TO STAY AWAKE!
Or maybe try to avoid posting on greekchat (until you're work is done), you can even unplug your modem so you won't be tempted to use the internet.

I find it useful to do jumping-jacks every 30 minutes or have a friend nearby to talk to me so I don't snooze. If all else fails, I go straight to the No-Doze.

NEWBIE! Hi! How did your paper go ?
Do NOT take caffeine. There have been numerous studies that show how dangerous caffeine is for your body; plus it does not really work; because once you load up on it, the "effects" stop working in a few hours and you crash and burn...
What has realy helped me is to splash my face with cold water a couple of times. Gets me wide-awake in an instant . And I don't know why, but when I take little naps, I only wake up more tired and groggier than before1 I think it's b/c I want to sleep more So naps might not be too good.
The jumping-jacks thing sounds interesting; I might try that. Oh, also, I heard that if you excercise later at night than usual and you know that you are going to sleep LATE, it will help you. Because usually it's horrible to go to sleep 2 hours after exercise, b/c it only keeps your body awake. so try exercising an hour before you study, it should energize you! HTH, sweetie!

Newbie!! Theta hit it right on the button...caffeine is dangerous, especially when taken in mult. quantities.
The rest of the ideas sound interesting, but I swear you should try what Theta suggested about the exercising right before studying. It really energizes a tired mind and body, and will guarantee the chance of you finally staying awake and cracking the books!!

A little bit of caffeine once in a while is okay, all the time is not.
I didn't have a coffee maker in my dorm, so Espresso was obviously out of the question. Vivarin was what helped me get through Political Philosophy and Theory as well as Political Analysis and Inquiry. Though I do not consume it now (I find there is no need to), I was very careful in my dosage. If I consumed a tablet, I made sure that I had no other forms of caffeine already in my system. But still, just because it worked for me, it may not work for everyone.
One finals week I was up for almost 36 hours straight doing papers and studying for finals, and Tae-Bo (I know, it's a little extreme) helped at 1 in the morning (even though my roomie didn't appreciate it).
Everyone has their own remedies, and hopefully you've found something that you're comfortable with that suits you fine.
Okay--so if anyone masters the art of sleeping with your eyes open (especially at work), please let me know!

LOL, thanks OTW!!
Tae-bo! That sounds so fun, I have never been able to start it though! I've tried yoga and then stopped...I can't seem to get a steady fitness routine going, LOL!! I guess I'm just too flighty hehe...
WOW, 36 hours!!! I'm so proud of you. I can never last that long, for some weird reason. I nod off at 11 when I'm doing my hmwk...but what's funny is that if I'm out, I'm always energetic and never tired . I guess it's just the hmwk then!!! LOL...
You know what, OTW, your Q about sleeping w/your eyes open LOL made me remember an interesting fact I learned: Did you guys all know that it is IMPOSSIBLE to sneeze with your eyes open! I've tried so hard to keep it open, to prove 'em wrong, LOL, but it never works

One of the first things I learned in college:
Mountain Dew has the most caffeine of any soft drink. (Unless you count Jolt, of course)

Chocolate covered espresso beans... they actually taste great (if you like coffee) and give you an instant caffeine/sugar lift.
Got me through finals many a time
