Question about Locals at Ga Tech

I have a friend who is going through recruitment at Ga Tech. I was looking on their panhellenic site (http://www.panhellenic.gatech.edu/ )and saw they have 6 NPC sororities, 3 associate members, and 1 local. The non-NPC sororities do recruitment after the NPC ones and have some limitations on their involvment with campus panhellenic.

So my question is, how does the sorority system function here? It seems like the associates will always be "second-tier" if they are doing recruitment after the bulk of girls have accepted bids. Doesn't that defeat the "panhellenic" attitude we're trying to have? Also, why did panhellenic choose these groups over NPC sororities? I am not familiar with any of these associates, so if they are up-and-coming and soon to be NPC or cater to a certain demographic, maybe they do quite well. I would love to hear any information on this!

AOE is a group for women in engineering. Alpha Delta Chi is a Christian sorority. LTA is a Latina sorority. In each case, they probably do not conduct rush the way the NPC groups do, therefore it would be counterproductive to make them full members (and have to pay full dues) if they won't participate in Panhel rush.

I think there's a poster on here from Chi Omega Tau, she would know whether they want to stay local or go national.

One is a national Christian sorority, so it is not a member of the NPC. If you look on their website, it explains that. They are housed. Another is a national engineering sorority. I think the third is a national latina sorority.

The local is fairly new. If there is an NPC expansion, they would perhaps absorb this sorority. Expansion is under discussion, but they may need to look at the figures after this recruitment.

Why would they let them start a local rather than an NPC sorority? Because somebody asked for it and petitioned the student activities board. If you look closely at the websites, most of them tell the history of how the group came to be.

NPC expansion is a lot more complicated and expensive, so I guess if they wanted to start their own group, a local was the logical first step.

Tech is only 27% girls.

ETA: you beat me to it, 33 girl, I got sidetracked in the middle of my post!

I just want to add that there was an article in the GA Tech paper about Chi Omega Tau seeking NPC affiliation. It seemed like it was a go but I haven't seen it in a Bulletin.

I think they will probably start working on it again after this recruitment is over.

Wow, that seems extreemly small for NPC at a major University?

I know Tom...you'd like to see all 26 groups on all 500+ campuses, but it's just not the NPC way!

When I was a student at GT in the 70's, only 11% of the student population was female!!!
There were only three NPC sororities. ADPi was the fourth, it was TBA my sophomore year and became ADPi the next year. Most of the sororities were pretty small at the time. Most coeds became little sisters for the fraternities.
Tech has come a long way!!!

Does Ga Tech post the bid lists like UGA, Auburn, etc? I know my friend will be out celebrating and I'm curious where she ended up!

However, this fall's freshman class is 32%, according to my orientation leader friends. That may not seem like a big difference to some of you out there, but it's the difference between 2.6 guys for every girl and 2.1 guys for every girl, which is a step in the right direction.

That's also what they said at the Freshman Convocation. And I'm glad we could count on you to do the math!

We had a saying on the Engineering Campus...the odds are good, but the goods are odd!

It's the most practical kind of math there is at Georgia Tech.
