Writing new songs
I know there are a plethora (that's a calendar word for those of you who've seen Alfie) of song threads, but I accepted a bit of a challenge from my roomie/sister to write a Sigma Kappa song to Green Day's "American Idiot" and I'm looking for a bit of feedback on what I have so far!
Don't wanna be in any old sorority
Don't wanna be a member of "XYZ"
Can you imagine anywhere else for me?
NO WAY! Sig Kap's right for me!
Welcome to a sisterhood of friends
With us the fun never ends
We've always lived one heart one way
Sigma Kappa, lavender and maroon
Not the kind of gir-ls to swoon
Somehow we ju-st kne-w!
We proudly sport the heart and the dove
These are the signs of our sisterly love
Always ready to shout, dance or sing!
We know our sisterhood's the real thing
Welcome to a sisterhood of friends
With us the fun never ends
When you're here the ski-es aren't so gray!
Sigma Kappa, Lavender and Maroon
Seems the night is always ending too soon Somehow we ju-st kn-ew
Don't wanna be a Gamma Phi or DG
Not for me is ADPi or KD
Could not have picked a better place for me!
Our sisterhood, we really are lucky.
Welcome to a sisterhood of friends
With us the fun never ends
We've always lived one heart one way
Sigma Kappa, lavender and maroon
We're not the kind fed from a silver spoon!
Wish you could be one too?
Feedback please! And if people like I'll consider more challenges! I'm notoriously bad at following through on things, but this entertains me enough that I should keep at it.
EDIT: "Final" Draft! Feedback still accepted!

I think it sounds really good. I love that Green Day song and I really like the lyrics you put with it! I am amazed when people can do this! I did it once for serinading for our Crush party and it was not easy and that was only like a 6 line song!!!
Way to go!

I'm still working on the rest of it.
I'm hoping for some ideas.

Should I know what a ribboning ceremony is?
Sometimes I feel like I should post an alert at the top of every post.
WARNING! FROM THE MIDWEST! AT A MIDWESTERN SCHOOL! MAY NOT UNDERSTAND SOUTHERN SORORITY-ESE!
(No offense meant of course )
lol
The beat's a little fast for pref night, though a song to Time of Your Life, would be good for that! (Task number 2)
Anyone have ideas for the lyrics? I'm gonna put some work into it tonight/ tomorrow and hope to have it finished by then!
Anyone have ideas for other songs to do? We usually use these for our skit nights, or for sisterhood retreats/events. And if there are requests I'd love to help out!
(Oh and if anyone was wondering, the other sororities mentioned are the other 4 sororites on SLU's campus.)

Sorry for the double post, but i've edited the song above into it's *final* format. Of course, all suggestions will be taken into account!

Im also a midwesterner!!
Ribboning is when you get your new members and you pin SK colored ribbons on them for them to wear. you guys never did that? Also called the Pinning ceremony we just "ribboned" our girls the night of bid night so the next day they have lavender and maroon ribbons to wear and can wear them under their pledge pins once COB was over and we were set with the fall class.

Ah, I see.
I'm kind of confused then.
So you formal rush, then ribbon on bid day, then they don't get their pledge pins, and i assume don't actually pledge, until COB is over?
We have Formal, bid day (no ribboning), Pledging, COB, and then as we COB (actually called CR on campus now) we have more pledging ceremonies until it's too late to pledge more before initiation in November. We COB a lot though, so this my be a difference.
Our girls do get ribbons, but during pledging, and I don't remember ever wearing mine after that.
(Since in other chapters the ribboning itself isn't ritual, I think this is ok to put here, though i'll delete it if others disagree)

ribbon ceremonies are usually done when you have a group of girls who accept bids ... my chapter does it to make the girls feel "connected" and a part of the chapter before their actual pinning ceremony. On bid day when we come back to our chapter house we usually do a pinning ceremony the VPM and the PRES say something and then the NMs get ribbons and we all say yay and its over.
Check out the VPM handbook ... there are outlines for ribbon ceremonies there.

Gotcha. Well we have no house, and no ribboning ceremonies. We ususally have bid day on a Sunday or Monday if it's Labor Day weekend, then pledging the following Tuesday.
Our new girls get plenty of goodies though

we had a ribbon ceremony at our bid night celebration/gathering.. i don't recall that it was called anything in particular. that night is also when we got our "heart" sis - she put the ribbon on you. if it's cob there is no ribbon ceremony, the girl just gets her ribbon when she pledges.
