Now, there are only two...
One of the original Mercury Astronauts has died.
Walter M. Schirra (1923–2007) Mercury-Atlas 8, Gemini 6A, Apollo 7 passed away at age 80.
The two surviving members of the "Mercuty 7" are M. Scott Carpenter, a Delt from the Beta Kappa Chapter at the University of Colorado, and John H. Glenn, former U.S. Sentor from Ohio, and the first American to orbit the Earth.
"Wally" Schirra went into space in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, but did not walk on the Moon.

I can't believe so many are gone. A lot of the early astronauts spent time at our house; my dad was the physician to many of them. They were mostly short with crewcuts. Well, anyway...RIP, Wally Schirra.

Seriously? My uncle designed the gantry for the first missions. Wonder if they knew each other?

I've seen that gantry.
Mrs. DA's late uncle was a NASA Engineer and a flight director or manager of some sort in the Apollo Program. I don't know what he may have done on Mercury or Gemini, but we've been told that his picture and other memorabilia are in a room in Huntsville.

I know many people have seen the movie, "The Right Stuff." But, if you haven't read the book you should. It really showed their personalities.

It appears that the early astronauts all lived, for the most part, long and healthy lives.
