Trouble with Recommendations!

Hey everyone!
I'm really looking foward to rushing this fall as a freshman at an SEC school, but I'm really worried about finding recommendations. Although my mother and many of her friends were in sororities, most of them aren't represented at the school I will be attending. Any advice as to where I can find some recommendations?

Welcome to GC and congrats on being accepted to your university. Check out this post for some advice. Regarding recs, call, email and visit with all of your family members, friends, teachers, church/temple members, etc., and talk about your interest in going through recruitment. Also get in touch with your area Alumnae Panhellenic (www.npcwomen.org). It's already pretty late in the summer to be contacting alumnae, so you need to hustle.

Also, talk to your mother's friends. Even if their sorority isn't represented at your campus, you might be able to get a few more through their connections. Ask teachers from your high school (you'll be surprised how many are Greek). A teacher could give a chapter a very unique good perspective on a PNM. And like adpiucf said, get the rest by contacting your local Alumnae Panhellenic Association. Good luck!

Agreed. Your local alumnae panhellenic will be a great source.

I posted this in another thread about recs and I thought it might be helpful if I posted it again here:

Understand that getting recs can be difficult, especially if you don't live in an area with lots of greek women or you don't have many greeks in your family.

It just takes persistence. You have to exhaust all of your available resources & contacts. Think of EVERY place you go regularly where there are women who know you well. Any of them could be a sorority alumna.
Some of these places include:

*school (teachers, counselors, coaches)
*church or other place of worship ( sorority women might attend your church service or lead your bible study)
*camps you attend(ed)(your camp counselors might be sorority women)
*work(co-workers or their family members might be greek)
*your parents(their co-workers or friends)

^ I second that. Sometimes father's work colleagues or even old college buddies are married to sorority women willing to help out!

Like these lovely GC'ers have said, exhaust all possible options. When I went through this process I was shocked at the number of almuni I found. My mother was a high school teacher at the time and many of her fellow teachers had been sorority members previously unbeknownst to me.
