New Action Movies?

Hey guys. I think it might be because its "Oscar Season" and most of the movies I'm seeing are very interesting, intelligent, well-done films. Which is great. But now I'm really in the mood for a good, rockin' action film.

So what are you guys seeing that's on the horizon? There are two that I'm specifically intersted in:

Basic . Okay, first of all its John Travolta and Sameul L. Jackson together in a movie again. So right away I'm interested. And the premise sounds really cool -- a seasoned leader takes his platoon into the jungle on a "routine training mission" and they disappear. But these guys are so good that they only disappear if they want to. So there's this whole conspiracy investigation behind it... I think it sounds awesome.

Plus, it has Taye Diggs and Harry Connick Jr in it. Yummy!

The other movie that I think looks good is Tears of the Sun. Is Bruce Willis making a comeback or what? This looks like some serious action -- and it feels pretty timely, what with everything that's going on in the Ivory Coast right now. I'm also excited to see Monica Bellucci in it. She's a huge Italian star and I'm hoping she can cross over into the American market. Did anyone else see her in Malena? I really enjoyed that movie.

Let's see, Kangaroo Jack, Final Destination 2, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Biker Boyz, Darkness Falls, National Security and Just Married. Yeah, I agree, what "interesting, intelligent, well-done films"...

I'm not attacking you BTW, I'm just saying look at the top films at the Box Office. Didn't Darwin talk about a point where we start devolving?

You're right... a lot of the movies at the top of the box office are exactly the opposite of "intelligent and well-done." But those types of movies are definitely out there -- like The Hours, Adaptation, The Pianist and About Schmidt. And those are the ones I'm referring to. They're all good but now I'm in the mood for some Bruce Willis style action, like Tears of the Sun.

I don't even like action films, per say, but I am really excited about "The Core" with Hillary Swank! It looks sooooooooooo good. Probably because weather and destruction are involved. It's why I love Deep Impact more than Armaggedon....more weather related scenes...

It seems like the movies are overloaded at certain times of the year and underloaded at others (like now). I guess that's kind of the way it's always been.

I agree with that. But what's kinda sad is that most of the films you are refering to, in terms of Box Office Earnings, never got past 3rd, and that was most likely their release week (Except for CHicago, which is good).

I guess I'm just kinda mad because I thought Gangs of New York, which was well recieved by critics, was great, and I thought the casting of Leo, among other things, would have made it a top movie at the box office. But I guess no one wanted to see a film made by our best living director about a slice of American history we hardly know about, and would rather go see a stupid movie about a couple of guys who steal 25,000$, hit a Kangaroo....well, you know.

I am interested in seeing Tears of the Sun and The Recruit....

About Schmidt was stellar...

Darkness Falls, I just wanted to kick the brother in the head that suggested we all go see it because it was going to be "a great movie."

I kinda laughed when I was skimming the top of the thread and most of the movies you were seeing were interesting, intelligent, well-done films. I only laughed because it was the action genre, which typically the films are pretty slick but not intelligent.

We'll see how Daredevil does this weekend, it shows a lot of promise. I saw The Recruit, and that was very well done, I'd recommend it to anyone interesed in Al Pacino, Colin Farrell, the CIA, or anyone who enjoys a good action/thriller film.

Why is Colin Farrell everywhere now? Is he the latest actor to sign a deal with the devil? lol...

A lot of people are calling Farrell one of the best young actors out there, if not the best. Some are saying that "The Recruit" serves as a passing of the torch between him and Pacino

I havent' seen a single movie with Colin Farrell in it yet and I really don't know how thats possible since he is in EVERYTHING. I'll probably go check out The Recruit and see how he fares. If I see Daredevil it would only be to check out Farrell -- I think that movie looks ridiculously bad.

DeltaSigStan -- I was surprised that people didn't flock to see GONY, too. Realistically I think they were turned off by how long it was. And it was so..... freaking ..... long. Scorsese is a fantastic director but I think he could have used some reining in there. While he did an amazing job of creating a whole world, there were many scenes that were just unncessary and the length distracted me from the film overall. I think he -- like Spielberg and Lucas to an extent -- has become too big for his own good. No one is able to pull him aside and let him know he's getting off track.

Anyway, one of the reasons I'm especially psyched to see Tears of the Sun is because one of my favorite new directors is in charge of it... Antoine Fuqua. He's the same guy who did Training Day which was so fantastic and so intense.

On the flip side, Basic is directed by McTiernan who needs to make a comeback in a major way after Rollerball. But this is the same guy who directed Predator, The Thomas Crown Affair, and Die Hard and DH3. So I'm pretty sure he's going to come through and make a solid movie.
