Social Forums - Facebook & MySpace

Hello Everyone,

I am an advisor for an Alpha Gam Chapter and wanted to get your thoughts on something. With internet sites like myspace and facebook becoming a part of the collegiate culture these days, how does an organization draw the line? What is free speech? How does an advisor draw the line of what violates standards? I have read the official statement on internet usage on the Alpha Gam website but any additional help would be great too.

I'm also a CA for an Alpha Gam Chapter and what I've done is let the women know that I have access to both Facebook and MySpace (I even have my own profile). They know that I check regularly to make sure that they aren't violating any of the Fraternity policies.

That being said... if there are pictures of collegians consuming alcohol, hazing or any other illegal activity, that issue would be brought to EC immediately.

If it's a question a good taste, decorum or sensititivity to others, I convene a conference committee.

Employers are now accessing these places as well. Collegians need to know that while they have the right to freedom of speech, they cannot violate chapter room secrecy or Fraternity policies.

I'm not a CA or even an advisor and I call out girls on items they have posted. I've sent emails (or messages) and told them that something they have isn't right.

I'm a CA (for a little whle longer). I also monitor FB and MS. I have sent emails when they post questionable pics and/or one of their friends (or sisters, lol) post questionable sentences. Even if it is an inside joke those not in the chapter might not get know that so there can be a bad impression.

I think that they are usually pretty good about monitoring themselves esp. as rec. gets closer.

Thankfully, (knock on wood), there haven't been any situations where the poster refused to remove the item.
