Recs

Anyone writing recs this summer? So far, there are 3 that I'll be writing. One is for the daughter of one of my best friends from HS. She is going through at the Univ. of Washington. My friend (and her whole family--well, actually, her SIL is a Chi O) is a KD, but I don't think there is a KD chapter there (not sure about Chi O either). The other 2 are for young ladies going to Clemson. One is a ZTA legacy with other GLO connections (I think KD is one), and the other is not a legacy to any GLO.

Keeping my fingers crossed for all 3 to pledge Kappa!!!

I will for my coworker's daughter. She's a two-generation legacy to Chi-O, but I figure it won't hurt.

ohhh how i have learned that being a legacy is not as big of a deal as originally thought. i know someone who was a double legacy to theta & got cut. same for alpha chi and alpha phi. i was a mu legacy, which is actually the chapter i joined. for the longest time i felt like i was only here because of my mom & it actually made me feel kind of crummy. i always thought "did they want me, or just take me because i'm a legacy?" our new member educators always said that each of us was there because they all wanted us to be there. finally, one late night study break turned into talking about kappa & my fears were calmed. not only did kappa cut a lot of legacies, they cut mu legacies as well. i've also been told by my best friend in the house that there was never a negative word said about me & that everyone loved me. i guess my picture (was of my dog & i) was a hit too! hahahaha

okay seriously, i swear this has a point. like you said, it can't hurt. chapters cut legacies left and right. also, she might love love love kappa (who wouldn't?!) more than the other houses & a rec always helps people pay special attention to them.

okay this is long. time for homework.

I will be writing several recs this summer. My youngest daughter is in high school and my older one is already in college (and a kappa!) so I have lots of girls "that age" in my life these days!

I'll be writing recs for a friend's daughter and a young lady I used to babysit.

The one I'm really excited about is my cousin-in-law. She is now a freshman at my alma mater, and when I approached her earlier this year about recruitment, she was totally not interested. Well, we saw her over spring break, and out of the blue she says "I'm definitely rushing next year and I want to go Kappa." Apparently a lot of her friends went Kappa this year and she sees that sororities really can be in line with her goals (good grades, sisterhood, etc.) not just partying and such. YAY!!

My friend's daughter decided to go to Ole Miss! Her parents recently found out that they may or may not be living in Washington in the near future, so she decided she would rather not stay out there if they won't be there. Most of my friend's family still lives in Mississippi, so her daughter will have lots of "moms" to choose from!

Recs

I love Kappa Kappa Gamma. I've done research on KKG and gone to the house at my campus and talked with the girls, and I absolutely adore them. However, recommendations are almost always needed to get in, and I don't know anyone who would be able to write me one (I don't know any alumna!). Would it be possible to find an alumna through the Headquarters, get to know her for about a year, and then maybe get a recommendation?

Please read this General Advice thread in the Recruitment Forum and scroll down to the info about Recs.

Try to go into rush with an open mind and don't have your heart set on just one sorority. Keep your grades up and be as involved as you can to build up your resume. Best of luck.

I've actually already gone through rush before and that's how I know that I love KKG. I only found this out after rushing was over though, after I could do some more research. Would it not be possible to do what I wanted to do in my previous post?

Honey, you can do all the research to your heart's content, but please remember that recruitment is a MUTUAL SELECTION.

As for your question regarding getting to know Kappa alums to get them to write your recs, well, that's for Kappas to answer.

I would not contact Kappa Headquarters. Keep getting to know the current members on your campus. Contact your local alumnae panhellenic if you have one (go to www.npcwomen.org to find one in your area).

OTW is correct that it is a mutual selection process. You can love Kappa all you want, but it's up to the members to decide if they feel you are a good fit for their chapter.

I just wrote a rec for the sister of 2 EKs. She will be going to LSU though. Still haven't heard from the 2 Clemson PNMs. The ball is in their court if they still want a rec from me. Maybe they went to the info session and heard that "recs are not required" and decided not to bother getting any.

So far, I've written recs for my friend's daughter who is going to Ole Miss and the double legacy going to LSU.

Greek Girl,
Try to see if there are any teachers at your old high school or counselors who were greek. If not, ask if they have friends who were. Check with ladies from church or other organizations that you or your parents belong to. You get the idea, right? If a rec is that important at your school (and I know at some it is really important), then do your best to track it down. This type of networking skill will actually come in handy after you graduate, so you are getting some good experience here!

You need to know that a rec (1) does not guarantee you a bid and (2) is not an absolute essential in order to get a bid. In the end, the chapter members as well as potential new members engage in a "mutual selection" process. And, having worked behind the scenes with recruitment for MANY years, I can tell you, it is just that.

I truly wish you the best of luck! Please let us know how it works out for you!

I hit reply too quickly! LOL

Hey greekgirl, if you know some of the Kappa's at your school, you probably know some who just graduated and are now "alumnae". Maybe you could hit one of them up for the desired recommendation. Just a thought.....
