Big Sister/Little Sister

When you're pledging in a sorority, you're assigned a big sister, someone who is initiated in the sorority and will guide and mentor you through the pledging process. What would do with your big sis as to hanging out and getting to know her and what gifts would you get for her?

To the OP: who are you, and why are you asking all these questions? The questions you're asking are really basic and, frankly, I don't know know why you'd care about finding out the answers before you join. The stuff about formal, sorority living, and now big sis/li'l sis?

Your MySpace page has stuff about Sigma, but then you say on there that your goal is to join a sorority before you graduate? Also, there are comments on your page about "fanfiction" stories you've written? It makes me think you're just wanting to write some type of gossipy story about greek life.

Well, my chapter doesn't have the big sis mentor you exactly. We have what is called a sponsor and the sponsor is your mentor until you know who your big is. They are there to answer questions and to help you learn about the org. Sometimes this is the big sis, but most times it is not.

The potential bigs would write down 4 or 5 names of the new members that they clicked with and the new member educator would pair the bigs and littles up. Then, before the revealing process the big would get the little various things for our org, but wouldn't necessarily receive anything from their little. After revealing the littles and big become part of a bigger 'family' and we would buy each other random things throughout the year!

But, I am curious, as are others. Why you are not asking questions about the recruitment process. These things such as formal, bigs/littles, etc are explained to you once you are invited to join an org. If you truly want to join an organization, you should be more worried about the recruitment process and becoming a potential new member.

I think it's natural for a potential member to be curious about the aspects of membership as well as recruitment. That being said...

The big sis, as the new member's sponsor, tends to take the lead in getting to know the new member and giving the new member gifts, as opposed to the other way around. She's supported by an officer in the sorority responsible for new member education, who advises the sponsors on appropriate activities and gifts to give the new members.

Some big/lil activities might include getting ice cream together, studying, going to the movies or watching TV together, working out, getting ready to go out, etc. Gifts range from homemade craft gifts and baked goodies to store-bought letter t-shirts and sorority items like stickers, pens, picture frames, etc.

Typically, toward the end of the new member period, the new member might present the sponsor ("big sis") with a gift and a thank-you note for helping her acclimate to the sorority. These gifts may be homemade, like a wood plaque with the sorority's letters and the big and little sisters' names on it.

The big sis is encouraged to spend time with the new member, introduce her to other sisters and answer any questions the new member might have about Greek Life, and in most cases, she will sponsor the new member through the sorority's initiation ritual (this varies from sorority to sorority and is not something that is discussed with non-members).

Hope this helps. If you are interested in going through sorority recruitment, remember to clean up any online profiles and to not show what could be taken as preference for any one particular sorority on those profiles. Keep an open mind!

Great advice as usual...but I think it's safe to say that the Tri Sigmas (the sorority she was really interested in) as well as the Alpha Phis are very well aware of her identity. That being said, I'll be blunt and say her chances of getting a bid to an NPC sorority are slim to none.

Yep....let's just say that my chapter sisters have become FULLY aware of the situation now. I think her chances of becoming one of my chapter sisters is about 1%.

My side of the story

I just wanna provide my side of the story so everyone can understand me. I'm sorry if what I did on my MySpace profile was disrespectful or offensive to anybody even though I didn't know, but that being said, I am still interested in joining a sorority and I'm not here to try to expose anything. When my blog was posted, to tell you the truth, that wasn't the whole story. So I hope that you can understand me because I'm not the kind of person to expose anything and I don't do that. I'm just here for the facts of what to expect if I wanna join a sorority, not to expose anything.

How could you NOT know that claiming to be a "future" member to an exclusive org without having actually been invited is wrong?

Actually, I was saying that that was the sorority I was interested in joining and I wasn't a future member of it.

I think saying, "FUTURE MEMBER OF SIGMA SIGMA SIGMA" pretty much says you thought you were a shoo-in.

ahahahahahaha

ok first of all, i can understand that you didn't know what you were doing was wrong/ frowned upon.... however, it just seems like common sense.
I'm in a local and if some girl was running around doing those things, that would get a veto from my house too.
It's called discretion. you should try it.

It didn't say "Interested in Sigma Sigma Sigma!" That implies that you want to join.

It said "Future Sigma Sigma Sigma sister". That implies that you know you're going to be asked to join.

Big difference.

And to those who will jump on my case & say, "oh no big deal", PM me because honestly there is more to this than most of you know (I'm trying to be nice and not put it all out there). It's not just about an ultra-creepy Myspace.
