Laura, I am more than likely one of the few people who know where that is! On top of Mont Eagle! It is a small denomonational school and i thought all chapters were of Natioal origon. I have respect for locals if they can last. It is hard unless the school so desires! I was there twice trying to find My House. Drove by it 3 times! Never saw it until got on Greekpages and said damn there it is! You do a grat job and I fore one bive you a2 thumbs up! Hell would give you mare but only have 2!!

Hey Laura! I remember that other thread too so it's not your imagination!

I think when it says the campus is open for extension, that means that NPC groups can come onto campus if they want. Since all the sororities are local, they will probably do something similar to what happened at Valparaiso U. - all the locals went national at once. The school is 60% Greek so it will be interesting to see what happens on this one!

It's interesting that almost all the fraternities on campus are national, but none of the sororities have national affiliation. A couple of the names of the groups lead me to believe they were formed with the intention of seeking national affiliation, but it could just be coincidence.

Laura--one of my daughters was in touch with someone in student affairs last week and he said that actually only 1 of the groups wants to nationalize. I have heard that several girls from this town refuse to go to Sewanee because they're offended that fraternities could have national chapters but sororities could not.

carnation - you mean it was in the student handbook or whatever that nationals were not allowed in? I would have thought it was a tradition and choice. As many schools that are forcing locals to go national, it seems odd to think of the opposite.

I have to say that Sewanee's campus looks absolutely beautiful!

Hi, 33!

I don't know if the girls read it or were told that by officials. It got to them--there are still campuses in the South that allow the guys to have houses but not the girls, and there aren't any brothel laws down here! By the way, the sororities at Mississippi State just got tired of that a few years ago and told the administration to drop dead, they were gonna build houses, and they built them!

Anyway, there were a few posts here last fall from a girl at Sewanee whose local was talking to nationals and I wrote to her but have since lost her address and I don't know what happened.

The locals at Sewanee aren't especially old, from what I'm told-- the oldest are a bit over 20 years old.

I so almost went to school at Sewanee! I toured the campus in spring of 1998 (I know that was a while ago, but oh well.) And at that time, all the sororities were local, and the student tour guide said nothing about any of them going national. Of course, if any of them would be interested in becoming a chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha, I would say that would be an excellent choice!

I am a Sewanee Sorority girl...i just saw this post...i thought i might be able to clear up a few misconceptions...I am in one of the younger loclas on the mountain...we did discuss the possibility of going national, but did not see any benefits that would outweigh the benefits of being local...Most of the fraternities are national because they have been around for a long time...women were first admitted to the university in 1969...the first sorority was founded in the mid to late 70's...Some of our fraternities are local, in fact one of our locals, was formally national...as to us chosing names to fit with a national, that is not true...with ATZ, their motto is to have a diverse group...girls from "a to z"...others were choosen because those were letters not used by other orgs...we are open to an extension coming to campus, but it is more likely that groups will start fresh and not be a local going national...we also are in the process of getting houses...currently there are three houses owned by the university which are shared by the seven sororites...we are in the process of raising money to afford the houses, but it is a slow process...the school is in full support of our local groups and in fact encouraged two groups of women in 1999 to start their own organizations...a small group of girls is looking into nationals and we were visited by three nationals last semester...it is possible that one will be one campus, but none of the locals are seriously looking to go national at this time...it is not that we can't have them, we chose not to...please let me know if you have any other questions

I happen to see this thread. My cousin's daughter is a Sr. and nephew is a Sophomore. It is a pretty campus, but I couldn't take the weather, esp. coming down the mtn. on I-75, lol!!

We happen to be on campus a couple of years ago when the Archbishop of Canterbury (??) was there. Didn't know there was actually one since I'm not Methodist. Thought he was a fictional character. Shows how much religion I know!

BTW ... the Archbishop of Canterbury is the head of the Church of England (Anglican or Episcopalian as its known in the US) not Methodist. Sewanee is affiliated with the Episcopal Church and has an Episcopalian Seminary there.
