Smile Multicultural Programs

Hi, everyone!

I was wondering what fraternities and sororities (multicultural and non-multicultural) around the nation were doing to promote multicultural awareness on and off campus. My sorority has started a multicultural book club in which we read books about different cultural issues and/or by authors of different cultures. I think it is really important to not only embrace your own culture but also to learn about cultures outside of your own. I'm looking forward to hearing people's responses.

Is that a chapter thing or a national sorority thing? It seems like it would be hard to read books during the academic school year.

The book club is a national and chapter thing. Our chapter is only reading one book per semester so it's not too demanding. We're reading "Bread Givers" by Anzia Yezierska.

So how do you all get together and talk about it if it is a national thing?

We discuss the book through message boards and chats. There are a ton of books to discuss and read out there that hardly ever get mainstream recognition. This gives us an opportunity to give these books new readership.
