I just came across this thread as I lurk in GC only every now and then.
I too am a Wash U alum (graduated in '02) however I've spent the past 3 (going on 4) years back on campus as a graduate student and am still in touch with a few current members of my chapter (Delta Gamma).
Wash U does deferred recruitment in the Spring. It's usually the last week of Winter Break before classes start...that way recruitment doesn't get into the way of class. There are 6 sororities on campus currently...Delta Gamma, Pi Beta Phi, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Chi Omega, Alpha Epsilon Phi, and Alpha Phi.
I know last year saw a huge number of girls not only go through, but get bids, and pledge. Delta Gamma had 53 girls in their New Member class (a huge jump from when I was an undergrad when we thought a pledge class of 40 was big!)--I cannot speak for the other 5 chapters. However, only about 25% of undergrad girls are actually Greek. Wash U is more low-key than say, a Big 10 school (and certainly more low key than an SEC School!). Recs are not necessarily required but could be helpful.
Because recruitment is deferred your friend may get to know girls in different sororities if she is involved in other campus organizations (and a number of RAs are also Greek; although some try to hide their affiliation so not to make girls think they should/should not join their chapter). Yes, that also means there's a chance to 'stereotype' chapters. I will say that stereotyping of chapters does happen HOWEVER the stereotypes given to certain chapters when I was an undergrad are not necessarily the stereotypes given to those same chapters now--things change! Usually, every woman who goes all the way through recruitment and signs a bid card gets a bid (however, there's no guarantee). There are girls who get dropped from all of the houses before the end of recruitment (especially if it is someone who does not meet grade standards). A 2.0 is required to rush, however many chapters set their requirements higher. People tend to fall into the house they are meant to be in. That doesn't ALWAYS happen (I had 2 sisters who started to pledge other houses, realized they had made a mistake and de-pledge only to re-rush the next year and join DG)...but it happens most often.
Recruitment registration usually begins in November.
There are 4 rounds: Go Greek, Philanthropy, Outsides (Skit night), and Preferences. Usually there is 1 day of break in-between Recruitment (usually between Philanthropy and Outsides; although they have put it between Outsides and Prefs before). If I am not mistaken girls go to all 6 chapters the first 2 days (unless they are cut for grade reasons from a chapter after Day 1)--but do not quote me on that.
If you have any other, more specific questions please feel free to PM me. Hope this helped you (or anyone else thinking of going through recruitment at Wash U)
