Arrow Σ's used as E's

I am sure that most of you are aware of the new show on ABC family GRΣΣK. It kinda bugs me that they use the Sigma instead of Epsilon in the title's letters. However, I was watching "My big fat greek wedding" with my mom the other night and noticed that in all of their introduction credits, every place where an E was required, a Σ was substituted. Are people really that ignorant? I mean, I understand that Σ looks like an E, but it's not; It's an S.

I mean, if you wanted to use all greek letters, it should end up being

ΓΡΕΕΚ

Anywho - I'll get off my soap box. Just wanted to get other's opinion.

Yes people are really that ignorant. I honestly think that a lot of the time when people do it, they don't understand that Greek letters have English equivalents.

Then again, before the symbol font was in widespread use, sometimes people (nonmembers and members) would use English Es instead of Sigmas when writing, trying to make the name of the group "look" the same, I guess. This resulted in some people calling my sorority Alpha Epsilon Alpha.

My boyfriend still calls my sorority "eek" and when you look on ebay there's a Sigma Delta Tau badge that's advertised as "EAT"

People just don't get it

Haha. I have a friend who calls me a Tri E. Or Three E's. He only does it because he knows it bugs me. I was like.. if you're gonna call me anything, call me Three S's.

Sorry to crash.

I would say that some people are that ignorant. But the people who do the titles for shows or movies like "GREEK" or "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" aren't ignorant at all -- they're trying to make the title eye-catching and Greek-looking. I've seen plenty of Greek restaurants (owned by Greeks who certainly aren't ignorant and who understand that Greek itself is not the Greek word for "Greek") do the same thing. It's been going on a long, long time.

Haha I refer to some of my SigKap friends as eeeks. But yea it's just a small minor thing, but it kinda is a pet peeve that people use Σ as an E or an E as Σ...it doesn't take that much more effort to go find the symbol for it to type it in... For advertising it's just used so that it 'looks Greek' which probably pisses off people who are from Greece moreso than it does us. :]

Sorry to crash, but I totally understand what you are saying. it's really annoying. So many times people called us "REE". Hence my nickname here.

It just really bothers me when members in organizations with a Sigma write an E instead of a Sigma.
