JOINING SORORITYS/FRATS

HI ALL!!!
I WAS JUST CURIOUS AS TO WHY YOU ALL JOINED A SORORITY OR FRAT IN THE FIRST PLACE. I JOINED BECAUSE I SAW HOW CLOSE ALL THE SISTERS SEEMED TO BE AND I WANTED TO HAVE FRIENDS I COULD ON ON ALL THE TIME...PLUS THE NETWORKING ASPECT OF IT IS GREAT:-) I THINK JOINING HAS BEEN ONE OF THE BEST CHOICES I HAVE MADE IN MY WHOLE LIFE

I decided to pursue membership (I haven't succeeded yet) in this particular sorority because I finally saw a place where I can be bonded with women just like me, who accept my cultural differences (with them, they are similarities), and who want to work for the good of "our" community as well as the general public. I felt out of place, always different. And with these phenomenal women, I feel at home and at peace.

I joined for the partying, social scene, alcohol, and good times. Yea, it's not something anyone feels comfortable admitting lately, but it's the truth for me and lot of people out there. I met a great bunch of brothers, had a great time pledging, and partied with lots of other GLO's. We were all responsible and had fun, oh yea and no hazing...

Asia2000, I remember you saying you were looking to bring an Asian sorority to your campus. Has one come to your campus? If you don't care to talk about it here, that's fine and I apologize for asking.

When I first started attending college, I had heard of Sigma Gamma Rho, but I didn't know anyone in the sorority.
In fact I really wasn't interested in it. However, as I began to look around the campus that I attended I noticed
that Sigma Gamma Rho was always doing something. Weather it was for each other or for the campus as a whole,
Sigma Gamma Rho was there. The women of Sigma Gamma Rho were also down to earth and open. They treated
everyone as if they were important and they were just so approachable. I had a few classes with some of them
and I had grown to realize that they were a group of peolpe I wanted to become a part of. I did my resaerch, and
when I found out where and how this sorority was organized (by these 7 school teachers on a predominately white
campus in the 20's) I knew that I wanted to help continue their legacy. I am proud to say that today I am a
member of the last created and best designed....Sigma Gamma Rho

Oh, it's ok for the question. No need to apologize. No, we are still working on bringing a chapter to our school. Working VERY hard too!! It's exhausting and exhilirating all at the same time.

If you are in the process of chartering an already established Asian sorority, would you mind sharing the name? I don't know of any , but I do have Asian freinds who might be interested in the organization.

I joined for pretty much all the standard reasons. The University of Illinois is a huge school, and I wanted to be a part of something so I could "find my niche" on campus. There was also the prestige of being part of one of the largest Greek systems in the country.

I chose to join my particular house mostly because they are a bunch of good, honest, regular guys. My house was very diverse, so there was never any worry about "fitting in." And of course, there's the partying aspect, meeting lots of new people, making good friends and memories, and having a place to stay when I go back to school to visit.

Hi! I was just wondering when you graduated and if you could tell me what the Sigma Kappas are like at the University of Illinois? (that is of course if you went to U of I -Champaign...

Finer Woman: At the Univ. of Texas there are a couple of primarily-Asian sororities (mostly Asian members, but several non-Asian in each also) - I know that alpha Kappa Delta Phi is a national chapter, and I *believe* (but don't quote me) that Sigma Phi Omega is also national. Both have chartered at UT in the last five years, and both are growing at an amazing rate. The rush, pledgeship and initiation procedures are very similar to the BGLOs at UT.

Hey everyone! I wanted to join my organization because it promotes multiculturalism, education, sisterhood and success. The fact that my sorority is multicultural is really what made me want to join. I grew in a very ethnically diverse atmosphere and when I got to college, the sororities at my school weren't all that diverse. However, during my Junior year, a multicultural sorority came to my school and held an informational meeting. They wanted to charter a chapter at my school. Well, to make this short, I ended up becoming a Founder of my chapter at my school! It was a LOT of HARD work and at times, I didn't think my sisters and I would get the chapter started. But we did and it was all worth it! Z-Chi 4-EVER!

Being a engineering major, I tried to get involved on campus by being a member of a professional organization. However, I came to realize that the "friendships" that I was making were more along the lines of being "acquaintances" that would not last beyond graduation. However, I knew I needed an organization that was at least based on the technical nature of my degree. I felt this was necessary for conversation: so I could talk to someone and have them understand the general concepts, if not the details, of the conversation.

I was lucky that around the time I was coming to these conclusions an opportunity presented itself. I was able to help found the local chapter of my sorority at OU. Alpha Sigma Kappa - Women in Technical Studies provides a means for professional development and networking as well as a strong foundation for life-long friendships. I still find it amazing that I know I will belong and therefore will remain involved until the day I die.

I hope you have found what you need, it definitely sounds like it!

I pledges DXiD this fast fall, and at first when I got to MSU i thought sororities were for snotty bitches, and that I would never want to pledge....i figured I would just rush for the free parties. Later, however, I realized what sisterhood really is, and I when I found a bunch of cool girls I decided to pledge. I am so glad that I took my head out of my ass and opened my mind up to sisterhood.....not all sororities are as you perceive them to be, and now I have a family away from home!

When I was got to college I said I would have no attention in joining a sorority, but when I started checking them out...I felt very comfortable. I actually joined my first semester in college, and think it was the best decision of my life! I met a lot of people right away, and the friendships I've made will always been there. I didn't get home sick at all because I had my family at school...Joining a sorority has changed my life, and I would never take any of it back...I have changed so much as a person going from a follower to a leader in so many ways! I've also gotten involved in many other activities that I would never have had the opportunity if I didn't go Greek! I would reccommend it to anyone. My real little sister just joined my sorority this semester, and I was so happy that she is getting the opportunity to have the same experiences as me. I love Greek life and college!!!

BTW, Smileyjak, my alma mater also had a local sorority called Delta Xi Delta.
