Beta Phi Omega

I was browsing the net and ran across an organization named Beta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc. I though it was very interesting. They are supposed to be a lesbian sorority but they are geared towards all women. What do you all think about them?

I have come across no less than ten sororities geared towards lesbian women and I honestly have no problem with them at all. What they do is their business and it is nice to know that many women have the initiative to create something that they feel is needed for their community.

What I do find interesting is that at least three of these sororities were founded in Tallahassee. Having gone to school here for three years, I have not noticed a large gay population and I have yet to hear about any events that these groups have sponsored. I have heard many rumors about underground happenings because the community, at least at FAMU, is not very welcoming openly gay students.

Tallahassee does have a large gay population. It just isn't like Atlanta where people are all open about it, lol. I think you just kinda have to know "the scene" (perks to havign a gay roomie, lol).

The bad part is the "underground" sororities are actually gay men who call themselves AKA's/Deltas/Zetas/SGRhos (yes I have met "members" of each). They even wear colors/letters and stroll at the gay clubs. It is somewhat disconcerting.

Along that line, just this morning on the Steve Harvey radio show in Los Angeles, they had a gay gossip columnist (I think that's what he does) and he was claiming that he is a sister of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and was even doing the sorority call! He did the call repeatedly, and louder each time! Steve Harvey had a fit, as you can imagine, and apologized to all the sisters who may have been listening. I say more power to those who start organizations for those with alternative lifestyles, but really, I would be SO ANGRY if a man (any man) was claiming to be a sister of my organization!!

Tally-ho

That's funny, like ClassyLady, I lived in Tallahassee for 3 years while attending FAMU and I did not recognize a large gay community. I always heard rumors of underground activities, but nothing like what Librasoul mentioned. That is a bit much.

ps- I miss Guthrie's and the Set

I never would have known about it if my roomie hadn't dragged me to certain gay clubs.

Also...omg, I so need to get a Gut Box now that you mentioned it!!!

I know there was a reason I didn't listen to the show this morning!

he was on again!

The same guy was on again the very next morning around the same time (8:40am or so). He calls himself "Sunshine" and he was doing the sorority call again and was referring to Shirley Clark as his "soror." (I don't know if she is a member of the sorority, but even if she is, this guy has nerve!) He was also saying "I love ALLLL my SORORS!!!" Then some other man who was on the show (I don't know who he was because I tuned in late) was commenting on how "Sunshine" was decked out in "AKA green" capri pants with a pink purse.

I don't know if this "Sunshine" is a regular now, but he was giving the daily horoscopes. As a sorority woman in general, I am annoyed by this particular person's lack of respect.

I live below L.A. and listen to Harvey once in a while (I prefer www.kkjz.org for mainstream jazz). Now, I'm going to have to pay attention.

New to me

I decided to go through the links at B Phi O's site and ran across some other interesting things:

Omicron Psi Omega http://www.geocities.com/OmicronPsiOmegaInc/

Which I am assuming is their "sister" organization. What is puzzling to me is this:

Friday November 17, 1911 marked the founding of what is now known as Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Many years later, Sharron R. Washington, A. Davis, Fareedah A. Thompson, Tyesha S. Gates, L. M. Jones, Giovonnie S. Batttles, Tawana D. Turner, Glenda N. Lee, and rashetta G. German pledged their
eternal love and devotion to the organization. The eternal love and devotion that these nine individuals had within their hearts, along with deep determination to have something of their own led to the founding of Omicron Psi Omega Incorporated on April 21, 2000 at the George W. Firestone Building in Tallahassee, Florida.

It is truly one thing to start your own organization with your own history and ideals. But this is totally different.

See...Imma need one of yall to send me a gut box. I miss those darn things...and the Tuesday nights at BW3.

Now as for the gay clubs in Tally my friend told me about one out by that cross street of Thorpe and Old Bainbridge road near Jefferson Commons. I don't know if it was true or not though but he said that was the local hot spot.
Other than that, I didn't really notice a large gay community in Tally...maybe I wasn't paying attention though.

i see the need for these sororities/fraternities for gays, lesbians, bi-s, trans, i really do. it's the lack of orginality that's the thing. okay, the organization seems to copy Omega Psi Phi in a way, your mascot is a poodle and your flower is the African violet. like there aren't tons of flowers or dog breeds to choose from
and Beta Phi Omega, i'm sure they are a great org. but the poses in a few of the pix...they really don't put their sorority in the best light.
okay, i may sound like a snob but i'm not the alone, i'm sure
