Question What Has Greekdom Gained You?

Hello and much resepect to all members of the Pan,

My question is directed to all greeks so please feel free to reply all. I am curious as to what you all feel you have gained through greekdom. And I would especially like to ask you if any knowledge was imparted to you by your frat/soror other than secret rituals and handshakes. I'm asking because I'm interested in joing an org (Kapsi), but if the only thing an org has to offer is a secret handshake and some rituals so as to make themselves feel like a seperate and elite part of society I wouldn't think it was worth the trouble. Basically, what is being greek all about to you?

P.S. Nupes I'll be especially interested in your responses.
TY in advance to all who take the time to enlighten me on this subject.

Ask not what greekdom can do for you, but what you can do for greekdom.

I doubt anyone will tell you the knowledge they gained by pledging their respective organization...It's not for you to know, just like our rituals/secrets are not for you to know.

You say you want to be a Kappa, but only if Kappa has more to offer you than rituals & secrets....Otherwise, it "won't be worth the trouble". Huh?

Do you even know what Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity stands for? Do you know what they are about? Have you researched the organization?

We've seen these types of "questions" asked on many internet forums, and prospectives get the same answer...RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH and BE DISCRETE.

And fyi, you may have offended some Kappas by calling them Nupes when you're not one, so don't be surprised if a Kappa does not respond to your request.

Good luck in your quest....you're gonna need it.

TY JJ for shining a lil light on my ignorance, for which I am partially embarrassed now. Yet, I think it's better for me to ask than to continue in ignorance. Yes, I have done a fair amount of research into what Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. is about; the results of which has produced some limited insight into the goals and history of the fraternity. Also I figured what better way to gain some understanding in this area than from the mouths of actual greeks, so I consider this a form of research as well. But to clarify a little, my question lies more in this: I've heard from a greek that aside from rituals, ceremonies, handshakes, the meaning of cetain symbols and having his history and founders beat into his memory he learned nothing else during his pledging process. Now, from my understanding, (please correct me if I am wrong), one commonality in the founding of each org in the pan was for the upliftment of blacks as a whole people. Keeping that in mind I would expect that something toward that end would be taught during the pledging process or elsewhere in the lifetime of membership in an org. I don't expect anyone to tell me what they were taught specifically because I would of course have to be a member of their org to be privy to that info. But please, somebody, tell me there's more to it than that....

P.S. My apolgies to the members of Kappa Alpha Psi if any offense was taken. None was intended. I'm learning everyday.

...not for everyone...

I will just say this...There IS more to it, if you do it for the right reasons.

Let me ask you this question...and please, don't reply to it, just marinate on it....WHY do YOU want to be a member of Kappa Alpha Psi? Like aRHOgance said, if you want to be a member for the right reasons, there's sooo much more to the organization than its rituals & secrets. You should do some soul-searching to figure out if pledging KAPsi or any BGLO is right for you.

I can tell you this...I pledge DST because there was NO other choice for me. Delta burned in my heart and I was willing to wait as long as it took to become a member of what I considered the greatest sisterhood. It had nothing to do with the secrets or rituals because I didn't even know anything about that. I was impressed with her LEGACY and the fact that the sorority has members to her credit that have left a SUBSTANTIAL impact on American society- not just the African-American community. A big sister or big brother can't teach you that....you come to the table with that type of desire and willingness to work hard for the organzation that you think is the best thing since sliced bread!

Again, good luck.

Dear Brother,

The things you mentioned are just a small part of what Greek life has to offer. I really don't even think of the rituals, ceremonies, etc. What I have gained is life-long sisterhood, being united with like-minded women and having that in common with women all over the world. That to me is worth it.

I am also sorry that you probably will not hear from a member of Kappa Alpha Psi on this board.

I wish you well in your quest for Kappa.
