Watkins the first African-American to assume the job as the county’s top prosecutor. He’s a progressive figure in an office that has long focused on tough prosecutions.
“I’ve been working at this since I was 16 years old in high school,” he said.
He is also the first Democrat to hold the seat since longtime district attorney Henry Wade stepped down in 1986.
Watkins said the county is ready for new leadership.
“We’re going to reduce this crime rate,” he said. “We’re going to address the underlying reasons why people are committing crime.”
For Watkins, 38, the race was a continuation of his narrow defeat in the 2002 election. He relied on the backing of African-American ministers and community leaders but worked to broaden his support in the months leading up to the election. Revelations about unpaid debts, lawsuits and business complaints apparently did not hinder his effort to broaden his support or attract straight-ticket voters.
Throughout his campaign, Watkins vowed to place as much focus on crime prevention and redemption of criminals as possible.
Watkins raised only a fraction of the money as his rival and throughout the campaign cast himself as an outsider whose inexperience was an asset.
