It depends on the area of the country and the school district. My public high school in CT went from the week before Labor Day (first Monday in September) to the middle of June. It could be longer if there were a lot of snow days.
There was a week off in February, and one at the end of April. A couple of years we had one week in March, but it got switched back.

I grew up in the Midwest and in my [smallish] high school we went from mid-late August to the end of May. We didn't have a full week off for Spring Break, instead had the last Friday in February off for the State Wrestling tournament and then a 4-day weekend for Easter.
(I grew up in a rural, extremely conservative Christian community; I think there are about 12 churches for my town of 4,000.)
Where I live now school still runs from mid-late August until late May/early June. The schools do have a week-long Spring break and I believe it tends to be either late March or early April.

Here in the Detroit area, school starts the Tues or Wed after Labor Day (first Monday in September) and goes until mid-June. Our Spring Breaks for the highschool kids are Easter week.

My Boston suburb gets the 3rd week in February (Washington's B'day week) and the 3rd week in April (Patriot's Day week). Most of you are probably too young to remember but the February break started as a heating cost solution back in the early '70s when we had the first oil crisis.
The school system where we live now schedules Spring Break the week before Easter. Since there is class on Monday after Easter, it makes it very difficult to have Easter Dinner at distant relatives' homes.

We always started school in the middle of August, and it ran through the end of May barring any snow days. I remember one year, though, we didn't get out of school until the end of June because we'd missed so many days for snow. Spring Break was always in April, either the beginning or middle.

In my school district, classes ran from the Wed. after Labor Day through the 3rd week in June or so. We had a week off in February, and a week off in April. April vacation coincided with Passover as the district is 90% Jewish. (The Catholic school took their April vacation during Easter week instead. In most years this isn't an important distinction, but every few years Passover and Easter are one month apart.)
New York State also requires students to take a number of Regents exams over the course of their high school years. On the days of Regents exams, there are no classes, as no one is allowed to be in the school building except students taking exams and the teachers who are proctoring them. So classes wrap up in the middle of the 2nd week of June, allowing a week and a half or so for exams.

Don't they do it also to coincide with the holy days of Easter (Holy Thursday and Good Friday)? I think it's not always one week, but somtimes the talil end of one week and the beginning of the next.

I think so.
I'm not sure how true this is, but in high school, someone told me that spring break is during Easter so that the Board of Ed doesn't have to make special dietary provisions for Jewish students.
