Expansion Update
I always enjoy learning about where my organization is colonizing, last night I opened up the monthly update from HQ.
Expansion seems to be a priority right now.
DU has a colony at Florida State and has just colonized at Johns Hopkins, next fall DU is recolonizing at Bucknell and expanding to North Florida. In 2007-2008 the University of Texas at San Antonio is on the list. Other schools slated for expansion/ revival include Union College (home of the Union Triad and DU's second oldest chapter) Syracuse University, Northern Illinois, Oklahoma State and UNC Wilmington.
OK everybody post up !
PS saw Sig Ep was going to Emory congrats to Sig Ep ,Vanderbilt and Emory in one year way to go!

Possible NPC Sorority Expansion at Northwestern U. (IL)?
The May 12 '06 issue of the Daily Northwestern online reports that Northwestern is in the "early stages" of possible NPC sorority extension.
Not all the news is good, though. Sadly, one of the NPC sororities at Northwestern will close at the end of this school year, due to low numbers.
See:
http://www.dailynorthwestern.com/med...rthwestern.com
OR go to the site of the paper,
http://www.dailynorthwestern.com
and use the site's search tools to look for a story in the May 12 issue. Some good search words might be ...

OPhiA has added two new chapters to our sisterhood within the last month (giving us a total of 19 active chapters) at Georgia Southern and at Penn State.

While I would love to see our Lambda chapter recolonize (and I know of many alumnae who would support it) at Northwestern, I have to wonder about the logic of expanding just as a chapter is closing due to low numbers. It must be at least 10 years since our chapter there closed (also due to low numbers). How stable has Greek Life been there since then?

I was just checking out the Greek Life site for Northwestern and looked at their expansion policy. Northwestern's attitude seems to be that all the chapter houses (which I believe are owned by Northwestern and leased by the groups) should have a chapter in them.
Northwestern Expansion Policy
(Please note it is a pdf)
It appears that the college policy is if a chapter that closes fails to make plans with the school to recolonize within 3 years (unless a longer time is approvved) the house is open for colonization.
Sidenote - Until I looked through the site I never realized how big the chapters were at Northwestern. In terms of stability, only based on chapter numbers, there doesn't appear to be a clear heir for the label of small/struggling chapter. I am just curious about what happened with the chapter that closed because it only colonized about 5 or 6 years ago so if they were really in need of expansion why did the organization never catch on.

No one has closed since AGD closed in 1995. Several of the other closings were in the 1969-1973 icky years. I know that NU has a VERY strong Greek system.
Alpha Phi 1881
Kappa Kappa Gamma 1882
Delta Gamma 1882
Kappa Alpha Theta 1887
Gamma Phi Beta 1888
Alpha Chi Omega 1890
Pi Beta Phi 1894
Delta Delta Delta 1895
Chi Omega 1901
Kappa Delta 1907
Alpha Omicron Pi 1909-1973
Alpha Gamma Delta 1913-1995
Delta Zeta 1920
Zeta Tau Alpha 1920-1969
Alpha Epsilon Phi 1921-1988
Alpha Xi Delta 1921-1972
Sigma Delta Tau 1938-1970
Alpha Delta Pi 1945-?/?-2006
There could be some recolonizations in there, but that should be fairly accurate.

I was going by the pop-up window for each group on the organizations page. Going by that the chapters (excluding ADPi )range in size from 114 to 142.

NU has a very detailed history page (I have had a very slow day at work today and got to look through it) According to that ADPi orginally closed in 1971 and colonized/rechartered in 2000/2001. All of your dates match up with the history but for some reason the history page doesn't seem to mention SDT.

According to both the 1991 Baird's and M. R. Sanua's book "Going Greek:Jewish College Fraternities in the United States, 1895-1945" (copyright 2003),
Sigma Delta Tau's chapter at Northwestern was there 1938-1983. It was their Sigma chapter. If that's incorrect, I hope an SDT will correct the information.

Maybe some did and some didnt.
It still makes some wonder why Chapters closed of Great National Greek Organizations.
It is always sad when any Greek Organization closes and is a celebration when one re opens!

Sigma Chi has colonies at University of Tennessee - Martin, George Washington University, and Knox College. Hopefully they will all be chartered in the 2006 - 2007 school year. It usually takes our colonies 2-3 years to get their charters.
