How much time is too much time on the 'net?

I say it's relative.

If you're a college student with little or no responsibilities, surf away! But, you should reexamine your priorties if you're constantly surfing on Friday and Saturday nights.

If you have a career, husband, and kids. You should not be surfing any more than like an hour. Think about the children and the hubby.

If your responsibilities are somewhere in between, I say no more than 2-3 hours a day.

i'm glad the gods of the internet appointed Dionysus as "director of time spent on the internet."

i say do you. i feel like people who spend "too much" time on the internet probably know it already. i dont think being married/havng children should stop you from web surfing.

i would relate net addiction to any other addiction: if youre doing it so much that it interferes with your daily life (ie, you skip work, forget to pick up the kids, stop bathing) or you start to feel guilty about said activity, then its a problem.

PS - i spent many a friday/saturday nites in college web surfing for hours on end. does that make me a loser? not really, considering i couldve been out drinking my life away in some shady bar. in which Dionysus will be appointed as "head of college partying and other random sh!t" and then tell me how many drinks qualify me to start rethinking my priorities.

/rant.

For the record, I don't do any of this, LOL. I agree with you though, it's just like any other addiction.

I'm not saying that my standards are exactly right. It was just my opinion. I was just asking for others opinions also. And yes, I spend way too much time according my standards. I've also spent a couple weekend nights surfing the web, especially in the summer, I try not to make it a habit though. No comment on what people IRL say about my internet habits. A couple swear that I'm addicted, but I agree with you, it becomes an addiction when it interferes with your life.

Any time that you really should be doing something else important.

I'd second that. There's a weird middle ground for those of us 20-somethings in between school and family. We have more free time and fewer responsibilities. As long as it's not interfering with your life - I have to leave early and get home so I can meet my Everquest friends and kill some orcs and I'll be on til 5 and late to work!- I think it's ok.

It depends. Is the net accessible at all times during the day?

Personally, my labtop goes everywhere with me and 90% of the time, there's internet access available. So I tend to check my emails every 2-3 hours (more frequently during class). Still, I hardly doubt it totals up to more than 3 hours per day unless I'm really procrastinating or something.

I'm trying to get a laptop to take to class only for taking notes, downloading notes and browsing the internet. I hate classes that have too much downtime or where the teacher only reads the notes that he already typed out.

Hopefully this semester will be different though

I don't as much as I used to. There used to be several die-hard Alpha Gam GCers but we've gotten involved in other things, lol.

Plus I can't look at it at work.

The best time waster ever is watching video clips online. I am on enough as it already, but now I must be able to find a rare music video from 1988 as well and will search and take many detours to find said clip. For me, internet surfing replaces tv/movie watching time.

There's no set amount of time. I agree with Drolefille. Anytime internet activities interfere with your real life, then you're probably online too much.

I agree with this. I think it's like video games almost. There's no set limit providing that you don't let the internet get in the way of your daily life or face-to-face human contact.
